The Indian women's cricket team has made its way back to New Delhi following their triumphant win at the Asia Cup on Sunday. India showcased an impressive all-round performance, scoring 183 runs for the loss of five wickets before bowling out Sri Lanka for just 111 runs in 20 overs. Sree Charani was a standout bowler, taking four wickets for 20 runs. The batting was spearheaded by Shafali Verma, who scored 68 runs off 39 balls, and Smriti Mandhana, who contributed 59 runs off 39 balls, forming a record partnership of 129 runs for the first wicket.
Shafali Shines as Top Run-Scorer
Shafali Verma emerged as the tournament's leading run-scorer, amassing 236 runs across five matches with an average of 47.20 and a remarkable strike rate of 171.01, including three half-centuries and a top score of 68. She also set a record for the fastest fifty in the women's Asia Cup, reaching the milestone in just 24 balls. Smriti Mandhana followed closely with 213 runs, featuring a century and a fifty, surpassing Mithali Raj for the most runs in women's international cricket and Meg Lanning for the most international centuries.
Top Bowlers Shine
The spin duo of Deepti Sharma and Sree Charani were the tournament's leading wicket-takers, with Deepti claiming 14 wickets at an average of 4.21 and Sree Charani taking 12 wickets at an average of 5.58, including her impressive final figures of 4/20.
Trophy Presentation Controversy
Despite their victory, Team India did not receive the Asia Cup trophy from Mohsin Naqvi, the president of the Asian Cricket Council (ACC), following their win against Sri Lanka in Dubai. While Sri Lankan players were honored with their runners-up medals, India was absent from the stage during the presentation ceremony. Team captain Harmanpreet Kaur did not participate in the post-match presentation, and there was no footage of India celebrating with the trophy, which is typically a highlight after such victories.
Team Spirit Amidst Tensions
Before the ceremony, the Indian team gathered for a huddle, with head coach Amol Muzumdar addressing them. BCCI officials presented the 'Fielder of the Match' medal to Nandani Sharma for her two catches. This situation mirrors last year's post-match drama when India faced Pakistan, where the trophy presentation was delayed significantly due to tensions surrounding cross-border issues.
