Historic Nomination for Indian Women's Cricket

In a groundbreaking achievement, the Indian women's cricket team has received a nomination for the esteemed 2026 Laureus World Team of the Year Award, following their remarkable victory in the World Cup.

This announcement was made by Laureus Sport on Tuesday.

Notably, they are the first women's cricket team ever to be nominated for this prestigious accolade, highlighting their outstanding performance during the tournament, which included setting a record for the highest successful run chase in women's ODI history during a semi-final match against Australia.

Led by Harmanpreet Kaur, the team is nominated alongside prominent squads such as the England Women's football team, the European Ryder Cup team, Paris Saint-Germain from the French football league, and McLaren Formula 1.

According to a press release from Laureus Sport, "In their Cricket World Cup semi-final against Australia, the India Women’s Cricket Team achieved the highest successful run chase in women’s ODI history (339) before clinching their first title against South Africa, making them the first women's cricket team nominated for this award."

The historic win was celebrated across the nation, with the BCCI announcing a substantial cash reward of Rs 51 crore for the team.

This nomination places the team among a distinguished group of Indian athletes who have been recognized in major Laureus categories, including Vinesh Phogat (2019), Neeraj Chopra (2022), and Rishabh Pant (2025).

The winners will be determined by a jury of sports experts from the Laureus World Sports Academy and will be revealed at a gala event scheduled for April 20 at the Cibeles Palace in Madrid.

This marks the third consecutive year that Madrid will host the awards ceremony.
