A Tough Match for India in Thailand

Pathum Thani [Thailand], April 5: The Indian U20 women's national football team experienced a challenging match, suffering a 0-5 loss to Australia during the AFC U20 Women's Asian Cup 2026 at Pathum Thani Stadium on Sunday.

As reported by the All India Football Federation (AIFF), Skye Halmarick was the standout player for Australia, scoring a hat-trick with goals in the 38th, 39th, and 48th minutes. Danella Brutus (54') and Daisy Brown (90+4') contributed two additional goals, leaving India at the bottom of Group C with no points from two matches.

Despite the scoreline, the Young Tigresses started the match positively, launching several counter-attacks against Australia's possession-based play.

In the fourth minute, Sulanjana Raul made a promising run down the left, delivering a low cross to Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam, who was forced into a challenging angle by defenders before losing possession. Shortly after, Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam's cross from the opposite side was intercepted.

Avaani Prakash, an Australian midfielder, created the first significant opportunity for her team, receiving a pass on the right and taking a shot that was saved by Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem. Anju later attempted a long-range free-kick that went over the bar.

Australia opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Butrus was fouled in the box by Cindy Colney, leading to a penalty that Halmarick converted. Just a minute later, she scored again, heading in a cross from Peta Trimis.

After halftime, the Young Matildas continued their dominance, with Halmarick completing her hat-trick in the 48th minute, her shot deflecting into the net.

They extended their lead to 4-0 in the 54th minute when Butrus broke into the Indian box and scored past Monalisha.

India continued to fight until the end, with Monalisha making crucial saves against Trimis.

The best chance for India came in the 85th minute when Bhumika Devi Khumukcham delivered a precise cross to Sibani, who unfortunately headed it wide.

In the dying moments of the match, Remi Thokchom made a vital goalline clearance before Australia netted their fifth goal in injury time. Substitute Brown intercepted the ball from Thoibisana Chanu Toijam and calmly slotted it past the goalkeeper.
