Indian Team Set to Compete in Billie Jean King Cup
The Indian women's tennis team is gearing up to kick off its journey in the Billie Jean King Cup Asia/Oceania Group I tournament, facing Thailand at the DLTA Stadium on Tuesday, as announced in a recent statement.
During a press conference in New Delhi, team captain Vishal Uppal expressed his optimism regarding the squad's readiness and preparation to perform in front of their home fans. "We are accustomed to the hotter conditions in Delhi during April," Uppal remarked on Monday.
He added, "While we cannot control the weather, we can manage our practice sessions, which have been productive. I believe the team is primed to deliver their best performance."
The roster includes Vaishnavi Adkar, Sahaja Yamalappalli, Ankita Raina, Rutuja Bhosale, and Zeel Desai, who was called up last minute due to injuries affecting Shrivalli Bhamidipaty and Vaidehee Chaudhari.
Although Uppal did not disclose his singles lineup for the initial match, he highlighted the increasing depth in Indian women's tennis as a positive sign. "It's a good problem to have when I have multiple options for player selection," he stated. "It indicates depth in our team, which is encouraging."
Vaishnavi Adkar, who recently ascended to the top of the national rankings, shared her excitement about making her debut for India. "It’s an honor to represent my country, and it’s special to be part of a team with these talented players. We are all eager for the matches ahead," she expressed.
Veteran player Ankita Raina, with over a decade of experience, echoed the captain's sentiments, emphasizing the team's thorough preparation and confidence. "We are familiar with our opponents and their capabilities, which helps us strategize effectively," Raina noted.
On Sunday, the Delhi Lawn Tennis Association hosted a lively welcome dinner for the participating teams, blending cultural elements with sportsmanship. Members of the Indian team donned elegant sarees, showcasing a unique Indian flair at the international event. Players and officials from various countries, including Indonesia, South Korea, Mongolia, New Zealand, and Thailand, attended the gathering, creating a relaxed atmosphere before the competition.
Notable attendees included Anil Jain, President of AITA, and Kartar Singh Tanwar, a Member of the Legislative Assembly.
Daily matches at the DLTA Stadium will commence at 3 PM, with free entry for spectators. Uppal concluded the press conference by urging the local community to come out in support of the women's team, hoping their enthusiasm would serve as a crucial advantage. "We are excited to give our best performance, and DLTA has always been a successful venue for us. Let’s aim for a victorious outcome this Saturday," he concluded.
