Indian Squash Players Gear Up for World Championships 2025-26 in Egypt
Indian Contingent Prepares for World Squash Championships
New Delhi [India], May 7: A team of four Indian squash players, including Abhay Singh, Veer Chotrani, Ramit Tandon, and Velavan Senthilkumar, is set to compete in the World Squash Championships 2025-26, commencing in Giza this Friday.
This esteemed tournament is scheduled from May 8 to 16 and will take place at the Palm Hills Club and PGC Golf Central Mall in Egypt.
Organized by the Professional Squash Association (PSA), the event will showcase top talents, featuring the men's world No. 1, Mostafa Asal, alongside the women's top player, Hania El Hammamy from Egypt, as reported by Olympics.com.
Abhay Singh, who holds the title of India's highest-ranked men's singles player at world No. 22 and is an Asian Games medalist, will face fellow Indian Veer Chotrani (world No. 43) in a first-round match.
The victor of this match will encounter a formidable opponent in the second round, either the defending champion Mostafa Asal or Germany's Raphael Kandra. Velavan Senthilkumar will also have a challenging first-round match against France's sixth seed and world No. 5, Victor Crouin.
Ramit Tandon, currently ranked No. 40 in the world, is set to compete against Egypt's Kareem El Torkey, who is ranked 19 places higher, in his opening match.
In the previous year's tournament held in Chicago, India's journey concluded in the second round, with Anahat Singh, Veer Chotrani, Abhay Singh, and Ramit Tandon all facing tough defeats, while Velavan Senthilkumar lost to Diego Elias in the first round.
Notably, India's women's squash team, including Anahat Singh, will not participate in this year's competition.
India has yet to earn a medal in the singles events at the PSA World Championships. Additionally, squash is poised to make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Summer Olympics, highlighting the sport's increasing global prominence.
