Indian Para Swimmer Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh Detained in Japan Over Allegations
Incident Leads to Detention
Mohammad Shams Aalam Shaikh, an Indian para swimmer, has been sent back to India after being detained by Japanese authorities. This action follows serious allegations of sexual harassment and molestation involving a female hotel staff member during the Asian Para Games held in Nagoya.
The incident reportedly occurred on Monday at the hotel where the Indian para-swimming team was accommodated. Sources indicate that the female employee was engaged in housekeeping duties in Shaikh's room when the alleged misconduct took place.
The matter was reported to both the local organizing committee and officials from the Indian delegation, leading to the swimmer's detention by Japanese police. Shaikh was returned to India the following day, just after the incident.
Impact on India's Participation
These allegations have raised concerns regarding India's involvement in the Games. The Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) is reportedly contemplating severe disciplinary measures against the 40-year-old athlete, which may include a potential lifetime ban. A conclusive decision is anticipated after the conclusion of the Games.
Although Shaikh was slated to compete, he returned to India without taking part in any events. The allegations remain unproven, and the PCI has yet to confirm any disciplinary actions.
