Indian Men's Hockey Team Celebrates Historic Gold Medal Win at Asian Games 2026
Historic Victory for Indian Men's Hockey Team
The Indian men's hockey team rejoiced in their dressing room following a triumphant gold medal victory at the 2026 Asian Games, which also secured their spot in the Los Angeles 2028 Olympics.
In a decisive final match, India triumphed over Malaysia with a score of 5-1, marking their second consecutive gold medal at this prestigious event. This achievement is particularly significant as it follows the women's team’s victory against China, making it the first time both teams have clinched gold at the same Asian Games.
Post-match celebrations erupted in the dressing room, where players danced and sang along to lively Punjabi music, with head coach Craig Fulton joining in the festivities.
A tweet from the team encapsulated the joyous atmosphere: 'A special evening calls for special celebration! The boys are bringing the Asian Games gold home from Japan and the dressing room is FULL OF GOLDEN VIBES! #HockeyIndia #IndiaKaGame #AsianGames2026 #AichiNagoya2026.'
A Historic Double Gold Finish
This victory marks a historic moment as the Indian men's hockey team successfully defended their Asian Games gold medal for the first time, achieving consecutive titles in 2022 and 2026. This win also represents India's fifth gold medal in men's hockey at the Asian Games, adding to their previous victories in 1966, 1998, 2014, and 2022.
With this accomplishment, hockey joins kabaddi and cricket as the third Indian team sport to achieve a double-gold finish at the continental level.
The match began with India pressing high, earning their first penalty corner in the 12th minute. Harmanpreet Singh executed a flawless dragflick to give India an early lead.
Malaysia quickly responded, with Shello Silverius scoring in the 14th minute, leveling the match at 1-1 by converting an aerial pass.
The first quarter concluded with both teams tied, as Malaysia's defense effectively stifled India's offensive efforts.
India's Dominance Continues
India regained the lead in the 23rd minute when Jugraj Singh scored from a penalty corner, bringing the score to 2-1 at halftime.
In the third quarter, India maintained possession but faced challenges in creating clear scoring opportunities. However, they extended their lead in the 43rd minute with a penalty stroke converted by Hardik Singh, making it 3-1.
India continued to press for more goals, earning multiple penalty corners in the 53rd minute. After a series of attempts and a video review, they finally broke through in the 55th minute when Shilanand Lakra scored from close range, increasing the lead to 4-1.
Just two minutes later, another penalty corner was awarded, and Harmanpreet Singh converted it, sealing the match at 5-1.
