New Jersey Colors for Indian Hockey Teams
The Indian men's and women's hockey teams will don saffron jerseys instead of their usual blue kits during the FIH World Cup scheduled for next month in the Netherlands and Belgium. This decision has sparked debate, particularly from former captain Viren Rasquinha, who questioned the rationale behind the change, while Hockey India defended it as a necessary technical adjustment.
Hockey India revealed the new jersey design on their social media platforms, stating that the color and design aim to convey a narrative that embodies 'India's pride.' The choice of saffron is said to symbolize courage, sacrifice, and victory, and was made after discussions with players and coaching staff.
According to Hockey India, the traditional blue uniforms were blending into the blue synthetic surfaces now standard in international hockey, which compromised visibility for players. In response to this issue, coaches and players suggested alternative colors, ultimately settling on saffron.
The organization emphasized that saffron not only meets technical needs but also holds significant meaning as one of the colors of the National Flag, representing courage and national pride.
The World Cup is set to take place from August 15 to 30. The new jersey features 'Mandala' inspired patterns that celebrate India's rich cultural heritage. Additionally, deep navy blue accents draw inspiration from the Ashoka Chakra, symbolizing progress and peace.
The chest graphic is a contemporary take on the Sudarshan Chakra, representing 'strength, unity, and momentum.' The jersey also includes tricolor piping along the shoulders and sides to reinforce national pride.
'INDIA' is prominently displayed on the front in stylized 'Devanagari' script, celebrating the country's linguistic and cultural diversity. Alongside saffron, both teams will also have white jerseys featuring the same design.
Rasquinha expressed his discontent with the new uniform, calling it 'embarrassing.' He stated, 'Hockey India has accomplished many great things, but this is disappointing. The identity of the Indian team has always been BLUE. I wore the blue jersey with pride for many years. Fans want to see our team in blue. What is the logic behind orange?' He emphasized the importance of pride, identity, and legacy.
Hockey India Responds to Criticism
In response to the backlash, Hockey India defended its choice, asserting that changes to national team jerseys are not uncommon in Indian hockey history. They noted that jersey color modifications have occurred in the past for various functional reasons.
For example, during the 2014 FIH Hockey World Cup, the team wore yellow jerseys, and in the 2018 tournament, they sported sky blue with a different design. Hockey India reiterated that the current shift to saffron was based on technical feedback from coaches and players, as well as the symbolic significance of the color as part of the National Flag.
