India's Boxing Triumph at Commonwealth Games

Glasgow [Scotland], August 1: India showcased its prowess in boxing at the Commonwealth Games, with Sakshi Choudhary (51kg) and Priya Ghanghas (60kg) advancing to the gold medal matches.


Both athletes delivered stellar performances in their semifinals, bringing them closer to winning prestigious Commonwealth titles.


It was a remarkable day for Indian boxing, as all seven competitors who participated in the semifinals successfully progressed to the finals.


Alongside Choudhary and Ghanghas, Jadumani Singh, Arundhati Choudhary, Jaismine Lamboria, Ankush Panghal, and Preeti Pawar also secured their spots in the gold medal bouts. Lovlina Borgohain, Sachin Siwach, and Narender Berwal are expected to join them later in the day.


Sakshi Choudhary delivered an outstanding performance, defeating Canada's Amber-Jane Wall with a unanimous 5-0 decision in the women's 51kg semifinal. She dominated the match from the beginning, winning both the first and second rounds 5-0 before finishing strong in the final round, ensuring her place in the championship match.


Meanwhile, Priya Ghanghas faced England's Lucy Kings-Wheatley in a tightly contested semifinal for the women's 60kg category, winning 4-1 in the opening round. Ghanghas started strong, landing the first significant punch to gain an early lead.


In the second round, Kings-Wheatley fought back, taking the round 4-1. Despite the intense competition and fatigue, Priya maintained her composure and secured a unanimous 5-0 victory.


Earlier in the day, Indian judokas Harsh Singh and Asmita Dey made history by winning gold medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. Harsh Singh triumphed in the men's 60kg category, defeating Australia's Joshua Katz with a decisive Waza-Ari (10-0). Asmita Dey also claimed gold in the women's division, overcoming Canada's Heidi Quach by Yuko (2-1) in a determined display, marking a significant milestone for Indian judo.
