Outstanding Performances by Indian Boxers

Glasgow (Scotland), July 29: The Indian boxing team had an exceptional day at the Commonwealth Games 2026, with five boxers advancing to the semifinals, ensuring their chances for medals remain strong. On Day 7 of the Games, Sakshi Chaudhary, Arundhati Choudhary, Sachin Siwach, Ankush, and Narender Berwal all achieved impressive victories in their quarterfinal matches.

Sakshi Chaudhary kicked off the day by securing her place in the women's 51kg semifinals, defeating Caitlyn Fryers from Northern Ireland with a decisive unanimous 5-0 score, as reported by ESPN. Having recently transitioned back to the 51kg category, Sakshi showcased her skills by dominating the match, winning all three rounds with identical scores, utilizing her agility and precise punches to keep Fryers under pressure.

This victory guarantees Sakshi a medal, and she is set to face Canada's Amber-Jane Wall in the semifinals on Friday, aiming for a spot in the gold medal match.

In another exciting bout, Arundhati Choudhary advanced to the women's 70kg semifinals after a hard-fought victory over New Zealand's Morgan Henderson. Arundhati displayed remarkable composure, narrowly winning the first round 3-2 and then taking control in the second round. Despite Henderson's aggressive tactics, Arundhati's patience and effective punches led her to a 3-1 split decision win, ensuring her a medal and a chance to compete for gold.

Sachin Siwach also made his mark by reaching the men's 60kg semifinals, defeating Botswana's Treasure Moremi by unanimous decision. From the start, Sachin demonstrated dominance, landing a powerful left hook early on and maintaining control throughout the match. Even after a brief stoppage due to Moremi's injury, Sachin remained focused, winning all rounds decisively.

With his earlier victories against Canada’s Keoma Al-Ahmadieh and England’s William Hewitt, Sachin is now set to face Wales' Owain Harris-Allan in the semifinals.

Both Ankush and Narender Berwal also secured their semifinal spots. Ankush triumphed over Seychelles' Jade Micock with a 5-0 victory in the men's 80kg quarterfinal, showcasing aggressive punches and effective movement throughout the bout. Narender edged past Samoa's Michael Seko in a thrilling men's 90+kg contest, winning by a narrow 3-2 split decision.

Narender's victory was particularly hard-fought, with both boxers showing signs of fatigue in the final round. However, a crucial blow from Narender led to a referee count against Seko, allowing him to secure the win and another medal for India.

This remarkable day for Indian boxing concluded with five boxers advancing to the semifinals, highlighting India's strong performance in Glasgow. To date, India has amassed a total of 12 medals at the Commonwealth Games 2026, including two gold, seven silver, and three bronze.

India's medalists so far include Mirabai Chanu (gold, weightlifting), Sharmila Dhankar (gold, women's shot put F57), and several others across various weightlifting events.
