Indian Boxers Celebrate Commonwealth Triumph
New Delhi, August 4: Indian boxers Sachin Siwach and Preeti Pawar are now focused on clinching gold at the upcoming Asian Games, following their impressive victories at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow.
The Indian boxing team achieved a remarkable feat, securing the nation's highest medal tally at the CWG 2026 with seven golds among a total of ten medals. Upon their return, they were warmly greeted at the Delhi Airport.
In an interview, Sachin, who won gold in the men's 60 kg category, expressed that witnessing the national flag raised after his victory brings a unique joy, which is the essence of their sporting endeavors. He stated, "The joy of seeing our flag hoisted is unparalleled. This is what drives us. My goal is to bring home gold from the Asian Games, and I encourage everyone to keep believing in us."
Sachin made a stunning comeback in the final, edging out Namibia's Tryagain Morning Ndevelo with a narrow 3-2 split decision.
Preeti, who also has her sights set on the Asian Games in Japan starting September 19, as well as the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics, expressed her gratitude to the supporters. She remarked, "We are thrilled to hear our National Anthem play. It’s a feeling that is hard to describe."
The 2022 Asian Games bronze medalist, Preeti, claimed the women's 54kg gold at the CWG 2026 by defeating Canada's Scarlett Delgado through a unanimous decision.
The 2026 Commonwealth Games adopted a compact format, resulting in the exclusion of several major events where India traditionally excels, such as shooting, hockey, wrestling, and badminton.
India concluded the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in fourth place on the medals table, amassing a total of 39 medals, which included 13 gold, 17 silver, and nine bronze. The nation has officially embarked on its journey to host the 2030 Commonwealth Games in Amdavad, with the Commonwealth Games Flag ceremonially handed over during a spectacular Closing Ceremony that celebrated the conclusion of Glasgow 2026 and looked forward to the historic centenary edition of the Games.
