Indian Athletes Shine at Commonwealth Games 2026 Track and Field Events
Indian Athletes Excel in Track and Field at Commonwealth Games
Glasgow [Scotland], July 29: Indian competitors had a successful day in track and field during the Commonwealth Games 2026, highlighted by national record holder Animesh Kujur advancing to the semifinals of the men's 200m. Additionally, shot putters Tajinderpal Singh Toor and Samardeep Singh Gill secured their spots in the final, as reported by a leading sports network.
Kujur showcased an outstanding performance in Heat 4 of the men's 200m, achieving a season-best time of 20.46 seconds to clinch victory in his race. Only the 16 fastest athletes from 10 heats could move on to the semifinals, so Kujur had to wait for the completion of all heats to confirm his advancement.
After the heats concluded, Kujur qualified for the semifinals in seventh place overall, keeping India's aspirations alive in the sprint category. The athlete, whose personal best is 20.32 seconds, aims to capitalize on his current form in the upcoming semifinals.
In the men's shot put qualification, both Toor and Gill advanced smoothly to the final round.
Toor, competing in Group A, began with a throw of 19.93m and improved to 20.14m on his second attempt, exceeding the automatic qualification threshold of 20m. This performance secured him second place overall in the qualifying round.
Gill recorded throws of 19.95m and 19.75m, finishing fifth overall, which was sufficient for him to qualify for the final.
New Zealand's Nick Walsh led the qualification standings with a top throw of 21.03m, positioning him as the frontrunner for the gold medal in the final.
With Kujur's advancement in the sprints and both Indian shot putters reaching the final, India continues to show promise in athletics at the Commonwealth Games.
