Historic Achievements for Indian Athletics

In a remarkable display of talent, Prime Minister Narendra Modi extended his congratulations to the Indian women's 4x400m relay team for their gold medal triumph at the Asian Games 2026, describing it as a significant milestone for Indian athletics.


The team, comprising Kiran Pahal, Machettira Poovamma, Prachi Choudhary, and Vithya Ramraj, secured the gold with an impressive time of 3:29.69, marking India's first athletics gold at these Games. Bahrain and China followed, winning silver and bronze respectively with times of 3:30.21 and 3:31.02.


In a post on X, PM Modi praised the athletes for their exceptional speed, teamwork, and determination, calling their victory a proud moment for the nation. He expressed his best wishes for their future endeavors.


Gulveer Singh also made headlines by winning a bronze medal in the men's 5000m event, becoming the first Indian man to achieve three individual medals at a single Asian Games. He finished the race in 13:32.75, with Bahrain's Birhanu Balew taking gold and Japan's Tomonori Yamaguchi earning silver.


PM Modi commended Gulveer for his consistency and endurance, celebrating his remarkable achievement.


Additionally, Pooja secured a bronze in the women's high jump, clearing 1.84m on her first attempts, which was a significant accomplishment as it marked India's first medal in this event at the Asian Games in over twenty years.


The Prime Minister congratulated her, highlighting the importance of this achievement for Indian athletics.


India's men's 4x400m relay team, consisting of Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil, Jay Kumar, and Vishal Thennarasu, also clinched a bronze medal, finishing with a time of 3:01.61 in a tightly contested race. Japan and Qatar took home the gold and silver medals, respectively.
