Indian Athletes Shine at 2026 Commonwealth Games and World Junior Squash Championship

New Delhi, July 28: Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla expressed his congratulations to Indian athletes who have excelled at the ongoing 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. He particularly acknowledged 18-year-old squash sensation Anahat Singh for her remarkable victory at the World Junior Squash Championship 2026 held in Canada.

During his address in the Lok Sabha amid the Monsoon Session, Birla highlighted the achievements of para athlete Sharmila Dhankar, who secured a gold medal, while Shilpa K Shyla earned a bronze medal at the Commonwealth Games.

He also commended the silver medalists, including Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Gyaneshwari Yadav, and congratulated Bindyarani Devi for her bronze medal performance.

Birla stated, “In the ongoing Commonwealth Games, Sharmila Dhankar has won a gold medal, and Shilpa K Shyla has claimed a bronze. Sarvesh Kushare, Valluri Ajaya Babu, and Gyaneshwari Yadav have all won silver medals, while Bindiyarani Devi has also brought home a bronze, showcasing India’s prowess in this competition.”

He further praised Anahat Singh for her groundbreaking achievement at the World Junior Squash Championship 2026, where she triumphed over Egypt's Ruqayya Salem with a score of 3-0 in the girls' singles final, making history as the first Indian to win this prestigious title.

“Anahat Singh has made a historic mark by winning the World Junior Squash Championship 2026 title in Canada,” he remarked.

Birla extended heartfelt congratulations on behalf of the House to all athletes who have brought honor to the nation, as well as to Team India, their coaches, and families.

He emphasized that Parliament's acknowledgment of these athletes' accomplishments sends a strong, positive message, reflecting the appreciation of the nation and uplifting the spirits of sportspersons.

“When our athletes achieve gold, silver, and bronze through their dedication on the international stage, and Parliament recognizes their efforts, it symbolizes the support of 1.4 billion people, which significantly boosts their morale,” he concluded.
