Indian Athletes Cleared for 2026 Asian Games Amid Injury Concerns

Athletics Federation Approves Key Athletes

In a positive development for Indian athletics enthusiasts, the Athletics Federation of India (AFI) has authorized triple jumper Praveen Chithravel, high jumper Sarvesh Kushare, and sprinter Jyothi Yarraji to compete in the upcoming 2026 Asian Games.

All three athletes had been dealing with injuries or minor health issues. The selection committee, led by former president Adille Sumariwalla, convened twice within a span of two days to make their decision after consulting with medical professionals.

Injuries Sideline Other Athletes

Unfortunately, 110m hurdler Tejas Shirse and long jumper Shahnawaz Khan will not be part of the team due to their injuries. Sumariwalla confirmed to a media outlet on Friday, "Both Shahnawaz and Tejas are injured and cannot travel with the team. However, all other athletes have been cleared for the Asian Games."

Chithravel is recovering from a calf injury, while Shirse is dealing with a foot injury. Additionally, Commonwealth Games silver medalist Sarvesh and Yarraji were also managing minor issues.

Notable Exclusions from the Squad

Despite her victory in the Indian Athletics Final series in New Delhi, javelin thrower Annu Rani has not been selected for the team. Her winning throw of 57.50 meters did not meet the AFI's qualifying mark of 57.62 meters.

Similarly, sprinter Nithya Gandhe, who was included in the 4x100m women's relay team, has been dropped due to poor performance, finishing ninth in the 100m final.

Avinash Sable Makes a Comeback

Avinash Sable, who has been recovering from a knee injury sustained 14 months ago, has secured his spot for the Asian Games by winning the 3000m steeplechase with a time of 8:32.39, surpassing the AFI's qualifying standard of 8:36.57.

Abhishek Pal has been dropped from the team after receiving a notice from the National Anti Doping Agency (NADA) due to the presence of clomiphene, a medication used for treating female infertility. He was set to compete in both the 5,000m and 10,000m events.

Additionally, Yashvir Singh has been approved by the Sports Ministry to replace javelin star Neeraj Chopra, who is sidelined with an ankle ligament injury.
