Indian Army Boxers Achieve Success in Finland

Participants from the Indian Army, including a female soldier, secured two gold medals at the 46th International Tammer Tournament 2026, which took place in Finland from October 30 to November 1.

The gold medal winners were Havildar Pawan Bartwal and Havildar Arundhati Chaudhary, who competed in the 55kg and 70kg weight classes, respectively, as reported by the Indian Army on Monday.

Bartwal, hailing from Uttarakhand, has been a member of the Garhwal Rifles since 2017, while Arundhati, from Rajasthan, serves in the Corps of Military Police.

Both athletes have an impressive record, having earned numerous medals at both national and international competitions.

Additionally, Subedar Mohammed Hussamuddin and Naib Subedar Jaismine Lamboria earned silver medals in the 60kg and 57kg categories, respectively, while Havildar Tanu secured a bronze in the 51kg category.

This tournament, organized annually by the Tampere Boxing Association since 1977, featured around 100 elite competitors from 12 federations, competing in 10 men's and seven women's weight categories under World Boxing regulations.

The five Army boxers were part of a 14-member Indian team that excelled at the event, bringing home a total of 14 medals: four gold, two silver, and eight bronze. This achievement marked the highest medal tally among all participating nations, which included India, Finland, Brazil, Australia, France, Sweden, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, England, Scotland, and Saudi Arabia.

In recent years, numerous Army boxers, including women, have achieved top rankings in various national and international competitions. The Army supports selected athletes through training at the Army Sports Institute (ASI) as part of its Mission Olympics initiative, in partnership with the Sports Authority of India.

Sports such as shooting, archery, wrestling, rowing, fencing, and weightlifting have been prioritized in this program. The Army Sports Institute, established in July 2001 in Pune, serves as a leading multi-disciplinary training center that identifies and develops sporting talent within the Armed Forces while also recruiting promising athletes from across the nation.
