Celebrating Success at the Commonwealth Games

New Delhi, August 14: General Dhiraj Seth, the Chief of the Army Staff (COAS), engaged with Indian Army athletes who excelled at the Commonwealth Games 2026 held in Glasgow, where they collectively secured 16 medals—eight Gold, seven Silver, and one Bronze.


The COAS honored these athletes for their remarkable achievements and their role in enhancing India's overall performance at the Games, as stated in an official release.


Among the 15 Indian Army athletes, they contributed significantly to India's total of 39 medals at Glasgow 2026, including eight out of the country's 13 Gold medals, showcasing the Army's vital role in the national sports landscape. Their medals spanned various disciplines such as boxing, athletics, para-athletics, judo, and weightlifting.


The Gold medalists from the Indian Army included Havildar Harsh Singh in Men's 60 kg Judo, Naib Subedar Preeti in Women's 54 kg Boxing, Naib Subedar Jaismine Lamboria in Women's 57 kg Boxing, Subedar Soman Rana in Men's Para Shot Put F57, Havildar Sakshi in Women's 51 kg Boxing, Havildar Arundhati Choudhary in Women's 70 kg Boxing, Havildar Sachin Siwach in Men's 60 kg Boxing, and Havildar Ankush Panghal in Men's 80 kg Boxing.


The Army's medal tally was further enhanced by Naib Subedar Sarvesh Kushare, who earned Silver in Men's High Jump, and Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh, who achieved a remarkable feat by winning Silver in the Men's 10,000 metres and Bronze in the Men's 5,000 metres.


Havildar Valluri Ajaya Babu secured Silver in Weightlifting, while Lieutenant Colonel (Honorary) Neeraj Chopra added a Silver in Men's Javelin Throw. Havildar Jadumani Singh also won Silver in Boxing, Lance Naik Shubham Juyal claimed Silver in Men's Para Shot Put, and Subedar Narender Berwal took Silver in the Men's 90+ kg Boxing category.


The boxing events were particularly impressive, with Army athletes clinching six Gold and two Silver medals. Havildar Harsh Singh's victory in judo marked a historic moment, as he became the first Indian male judoka to win a Gold medal at the Commonwealth Games. Additionally, Naib Subedar Gulveer Singh made history as the first Indian track and field athlete to earn two individual medals in a single Commonwealth Games.


During the meeting, the COAS praised the athletes for their commitment, discipline, and relentless pursuit of excellence. He emphasized the significance of sporting success as a core aspect of the Army's values and encouraged them to aim for even greater achievements in future international events.
