India Women Secure Victory in T20I Series Opener

Raipur (Chhattisgarh) [India], October 16: The Indian Women's cricket team kicked off their three-match T20I series against Zimbabwe with a solid four-wicket win at the Shaheed Veer Narayan Singh International Stadium in Raipur on Friday.

Smriti Mandhana faced a challenging debut as the full-time captain, as her team had to recover from a shaky start to clinch the match.

In pursuit of a target set at 115, India managed to bounce back from an early batting slump, thanks to a vital fifth-wicket partnership between Deepti Sharma and newcomer Niki Prasad.

This duo played a crucial role in stabilizing the innings after the team lost four wickets during the powerplay, steering India towards their target and taking a 1-0 lead in the series.

Earlier, Zimbabwe Women had set a total of 114/5 in their 20 overs after India won the toss and chose to field.

Kelis Ndhlovu and Sharne Mayers were key contributors for the visitors, with Ndhlovu scoring 42 runs and Mayers finishing not out at 43.

India's bowlers effectively restricted Zimbabwe's scoring, with Nandani Sharma taking two wickets, while Kranti Gaud, Arundhati Reddy, and Shree Charani each claimed one wicket.

However, India's chase began on a rocky note as Mandhana, Shafali Verma, Anushka Sharma, and Harmanpreet Kaur were dismissed early, putting the hosts under pressure. Deepti and Prasad then forged an impressive 82-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

Deepti scored 49 runs before narrowly missing a half-century, while Prasad remained not out on 39 as India successfully reached their target in 15.4 overs, finishing at 116/6.

This victory marks a promising start for India under Mandhana's captaincy as they aim to build momentum in the T20I series. The second match is scheduled for October 18 in Raipur, followed by the final T20I on October 20.

Following the T20I series, a three-match ODI series will take place in Vadodara, starting on October 23.
