India Women Secure Series Lead Against Sri Lanka
Thiruvananthapuram (Kerala) [India], December 27: The Indian Women's cricket team achieved a convincing eight-wicket victory over Sri Lanka Women, establishing a strong 3-0 lead in their five-match T20I series.
The match was marked by an outstanding bowling performance, particularly from Renuka Singh Thakur, who made a notable return to the team with figures of 4/21. Following the game, Renuka expressed her satisfaction with her performance, referring to Kerala as her 'lucky ground.'
Renuka, returning from a significant hiatus, excelled with the new ball, effectively dismantling the Sri Lankan top order with her impressive bowling.
During the post-match press briefing, Renuka shared her joy about her performance and reiterated her belief that Kerala is a fortunate venue for her, recalling her success in taking four wickets during her Under-19 matches there. She commended the Indian Women’s bowling unit, emphasizing the effective pacer-spinner combination and their commitment to maintaining high standards to enhance women's cricket.
"I felt my performance was solid. Having played T20 cricket for a long time, I am pleased. Kerala is my lucky venue. I have a history of taking four wickets here. I was thrilled to return to Kerala; it truly is my lucky ground," Renuka remarked.
"Our bowling unit is performing well. The synergy between pacers and spinners is effective. We are working on finding the best combination for the World Cup and striving to uphold high standards to secure as many victories as possible. Our aim is to elevate women's cricket to new heights," the Indian pacer added.
In addition to Renuka's stellar performance, Deepti Sharma also shone in the match against Sri Lanka, claiming 3/18 and tying with Australia’s Megan Schutt as the joint-highest wicket-taker in women's T20Is, with a total of 151 wickets.
During the match, Sri Lanka faced early challenges, losing three wickets for just 32 runs and finishing with a total of 112/7 in their 20 overs, despite a late contribution of 19* from Kaushini Nuthyangana. In response, Shafali Verma led India's chase with a rapid 79 runs off 42 balls, supported by captain Harmanpreet Kaur, who scored 21*, guiding India to an eight-wicket victory with 6.4 overs remaining.
