India vs Afghanistan: A Test Match Preview
India Set to Face Afghanistan in One-Off Test
As the one-off Test match against Afghanistan approaches this Saturday, India is expected to be the clear favorite. Afghanistan, known for their prowess in limited-overs cricket, has only participated in ten Test matches to date. Their journey began with a two-day defeat to India back in 2018, and since then, they have faced teams like Sri Lanka, Zimbabwe, West Indies, Ireland, and Bangladesh.
Afghanistan's captain, Hashmatullah Shahidi, emphasized the need for more exposure against top-tier teams to strengthen their Test cricket capabilities. He stated, "While we faced India in 2018, we come into this match with greater experience. To develop a competitive team, we require more opportunities to play Test cricket. Currently, our main experience comes from domestic red-ball tournaments, but we need to challenge ourselves against stronger opponents."
Shahidi acknowledged the team's lack of experience but expressed confidence in their natural talent, stating, "We may not have extensive experience, but we are ready to accept challenges and fight. This match will be a test for us, and we will strive to compete."
As Afghanistan's leading Test batsman, with two double centuries and an impressive average exceeding 48, Shahidi will be pivotal in showcasing Afghanistan's ambitions, especially in the absence of seasoned players like Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi.
He further remarked, "Many of our players excel in franchise leagues, demonstrating their skills in limited-overs formats. Our record in white-ball cricket has been commendable over the past few years. However, Test cricket is the ultimate format, and we are just beginning our journey in it. With my two Test double hundreds, I can attest to our patience and discipline needed for success in this format, but we must play more matches to improve."
