India Unveils T20I Squad for Upcoming Series and Asian Games 2026
India's T20I Squad Announcement
The Indian cricket team has revealed its roster for the upcoming T20I series against Ireland and England, along with preparations for the Asian Games 2026 scheduled in Japan this September. This marks a significant transition in Indian cricket as the team gears up for the two-year journey leading to the T20 World Cup 2028. Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who had an outstanding season with the Rajasthan Royals in IPL 2026, has been recognized for his achievements, including winning the Orange Cap and the MVP award. He has received his first call-up for all three T20I series, breaking a long-standing record previously held by the legendary Sachin Tendulkar. While Tendulkar made his debut at 16 against Pakistan in 1989, Sooryavanshi has made history by being called up at just 15 years old, making him the youngest player to represent India in international cricket.
'His Performance Demanded Selection': Ajit Agarkar
During the press conference announcing the team selection, chief selector Ajit Agarkar emphasized that Sooryavanshi's impressive IPL 2026 performance warranted his inclusion in the squad. 'What can we say about Vaibhav? His capabilities are evident. He played a crucial role in leading the Rajasthan Royals through the playoffs. His batting speaks for itself, and he has consistently performed well, not just this season but also last season. Competing in the high-pressure environment of the IPL, he has proven to be a game-changer. We have high expectations for him, and he has essentially forced us to select him based on his performances,' Agarkar stated. He acknowledged Sooryavanshi's youth but noted that his back-to-back IPL successes and his prior achievements at the Under-19 level showcase his immense talent. 'Playing for the national team will present tougher challenges, but he has demonstrated remarkable composure,' he added.
