Heavy Loss for India U20 Women’s Team

The Indian U20 women's national football team experienced a significant setback, losing 0-5 to Australia during the AFC U20 Women’s Asian Cup 2026 held at Pathum Thani Stadium in Thailand on Sunday. Despite this defeat, their journey in the tournament is not yet over.

Skye Halmarick was the standout player for Australia, scoring a hat-trick with goals in the 38th, 39th, and 48th minutes. Danella Brutus and Daisy Brown contributed to the scoreline with goals in the 54th minute and injury time, respectively. As a result, India finds itself at the bottom of Group C, having earned no points from two matches.

However, a victory in their upcoming group-stage match against Chinese Taipei on Wednesday could still allow Joakim Alexandersson's team to advance to the knockout phase.

Although the final score suggests a one-sided match, the Young Tigresses started positively, launching several counter-attacks against Australia's dominant possession play. Sulanjana Raul made an early attempt, breaking down the left flank and delivering a low cross to Sibani Devi Nongmeikapam, who was unable to convert due to tight marking. Shortly after, Anju Chanu Kayenpaibam's cross was intercepted.

Avaani Prakash from Australia created the first significant opportunity, receiving a pass on the right before her shot was saved by Indian goalkeeper Monalisha Devi Moirangthem. Anju later attempted a long-range free-kick that went over the bar.

Australia opened the scoring in the 38th minute when Butrus was fouled in the box by Cindy Colney, leading to a penalty that Halmarick successfully converted. Just a minute later, she scored again, heading in a cross from Peta Trimis.

After halftime, Halmarick completed her hat-trick in the 48th minute, with her shot deflecting into the net. The Young Matildas extended their lead to 4-0 in the 54th minute when Butrus scored after breaking into the box.

Despite the scoreline, India continued to fight, with Monalisha making crucial saves against Trimis. The best chance for India came in the 85th minute when Bhumika Devi Khumukcham delivered a precise cross to Sibani, who unfortunately headed it wide. Shortly after, Remi Thokchom made a vital goalline clearance before Australia netted their fifth goal in injury time, with Brown capitalizing on a defensive error.
