India U20 Team Aims for Victory Against Uzbekistan in AFC Qualifiers
India U20 Team Prepares for Crucial Match Against Uzbekistan
Tashkent [Uzbekistan], September 2: The India U20 men's football team is set to continue their successful start in the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027 Qualifiers as they take on the host nation, Uzbekistan, in a pivotal Group B match at the Do'stlik Stadium on Thursday, September 3.
The Blue Colts kicked off their campaign with a narrow 1-0 win over Syria on Monday, thanks to a late goal from Shami Singamayum in the 86th minute, as reported by the AIFF Media.
Uzbekistan also began their journey on a high note, securing a 2-0 victory against Bangladesh in their first match. This strong performance has placed them at the top of Group B, while India follows closely in second place based on goal difference.
With only the group winners and the seven best runners-up from the eight groups advancing to the AFC U20 Asian Cup, every point is crucial. Notably, results against the bottom-placed team in each group will not be considered for the runners-up, making the matches among the top three teams even more significant.
A win for India against Uzbekistan, coupled with a Bangladesh loss to Syria in the earlier match, would secure India's position at the top of the group and guarantee their qualification for the AFC U20 Asian Cup China 2027.
However, head coach Mahesh Gawali emphasizes the importance of focusing on the immediate challenge rather than looking too far ahead.
“Winning the first match was crucial, and it’s great to start with a victory. The first half was challenging, but we defended well and capitalized on our chances to score. We have another tough match ahead, so we must remain focused and maintain our momentum,” he stated in an interview with aiff.com.
The Blue Colts have quickly shifted their focus to training following their win over Syria. The squad returned to practice on Tuesday evening, with lighter sessions for the starters and a full training for the rest of the team.
On Wednesday evening, India conducted their official training session before the match, aligning their practice times with the kick-off to help them acclimatize to the evening conditions in Tashkent, contrasting with the warmer afternoon temperatures during their match against Syria.
Facing Uzbekistan will present a different challenge, as Gawali acknowledges the quality of the host team.
“Uzbekistan is a strong team with sharp transitions in both attack and defense. They possess a lot of talent. It will be a tough match for us, but we need to stick to our game plan, stay organized, and give our best,” Gawali remarked.
This match also offers India a chance to break a challenging historical trend against Uzbekistan at this level. In their previous four competitive encounters, India has not secured a win, losing each match.
Despite the historical challenges, the Blue Colts can draw confidence from their performance against Syria, where they maintained discipline and compactness, with goalkeeper Suraj Singh Aheibam making several crucial saves before Singamayum's late goal sealed the win.
Gawali noted that there is always room for improvement, despite the positive start.
“There are always aspects we can enhance. We defended well against Syria and showed resilience. Our mentality remains the same: we must improve in every game,” he concluded.
