Exciting Start for India U20 in SAFF Championship

Male [Maldives], March 25: The India U20 men's football team is gearing up to kick off their SAFF U20 Championship journey with a thrilling match against Pakistan at the National Football Stadium in Male on Thursday, March 26.

Matches between India and Pakistan are always charged with intensity, and with crucial points at stake in the group stage, this opening game is expected to deliver both excitement and significance, as noted by the All India Football Federation (AIFF).

The Young Colts arrived in the Maldivian capital on Monday and immediately began their preparations for the tournament. They are placed in Group B alongside Pakistan and Bangladesh, facing a demanding schedule in this three-team group where every point is crucial. India will also take on Bangladesh in their second match on March 28. With only two matches in the group, a single win could be pivotal for advancing to the semi-finals.

The stakes have risen after Bangladesh's 2-0 victory over Pakistan in the first Group B match, meaning Pakistan must secure a win against India to keep their knockout stage hopes alive. Consequently, India should anticipate a fiercely competitive match, despite their strong track record.

India U20 coach Mahesh Gawali stressed the importance of starting the tournament positively. He stated, “India versus Pakistan is always a significant match, but we are treating it like any other game. Each match is crucial for us. Our focus is on beginning the tournament well and making a strong start. At the same time, we must remain cautious and play with discipline and composure.”

India enters the tournament as one of the favorites, boasting a remarkable history in age-group competitions. The Blue Colts have claimed the championship title four times, winning in 2019, 2022, 2023, and 2025. This legacy brings both confidence and expectations, and the current squad aims to uphold this winning tradition.

“While we have some experienced players, this is a new beginning for everyone. Football is not determined by history; what matters is performance on the day. Therefore, we must stay focused and deliver our best,” Gawali added.

This championship also serves as a preparation ground for the upcoming AFC U20 Asian Cup qualifiers, but the Indian team is concentrating on the immediate challenge. “We want to approach this competition match by match and give our best,” Gawali concluded.

On the other hand, Pakistan is recognized for their physical style of play and will look to leverage their strength to disrupt India's flow. However, many players are relatively inexperienced, participating in only their second international match. “Pakistan is a decent team with good young players who work well together. We will strive to perform our best,” Gawali remarked.

Pakistan's coach Shahzad Anwar is aware of the challenges posed by India. “Our players will be competing in their second international match, and India is a tough and seasoned team. So, we understand the challenge ahead,” Anwar stated.

With rivalry, qualification stakes, and momentum all in play, Thursday's match is set to establish the tone for Group B.
