India U17 Women's Football Team Concludes Russia Tour with Defeat
Final Match Overview
The India U17 women's football squad wrapped up their tour in Russia with a 0-3 loss in their final friendly match against the hosts at the Matsesta Football Centre in Sochi on Friday.
After a scoreless first half, Russia opened the scoring just after halftime with Valeria Menyailova finding the net in the 46th minute. Polina Frolova extended their lead in the 80th minute, and Anna Bykhanova sealed the victory with a goal in stoppage time (90+2').
Match Highlights
India faced a setback when Julan Nongmaithem was sent off in the 82nd minute after receiving a second yellow card. The Young Tigresses, under the guidance of Italian coach Pamela Conti, utilized this three-match series to prepare for the upcoming AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup in China 2026.
Previously, India had suffered a 0-4 defeat in their opening match and another 0-3 loss in the second friendly, making this tour a challenging yet educational experience against a more physically dominant Russian team.
Defensive Improvements
In the early stages, a moment of hesitation from goalkeeper Munni nearly cost India a goal, but the Russian forward Mira Kuznetsova missed the opportunity. Despite this scare, India's defense showed significant improvement, maintaining better organization and discipline, which limited the Russian forwards' effectiveness.
The Indian team also managed to contain the Russian players on the flanks, forcing them to take long-range shots instead of creating clear scoring opportunities.
Attacking Efforts
India demonstrated a more aggressive approach in their attack, with coordinated pressing and promising midfield movements. However, they struggled in the final third, with attackers often failing to capitalize on chances, resulting in several missed opportunities.
The first half ended without goals, but Russia came out strong after the break, scoring almost immediately. Dana Dobrovitskaya's precise pass allowed Menyailova to score the opening goal.
India had their best moments in the 63rd minute when a long throw led to a powerful shot from Julan Nongmaithem, which was saved by the Russian goalkeeper. Julan had another chance in the 70th minute but was denied again.
Late Game Developments
Despite India's brief resurgence, Russia regained control, scoring their second goal in the 80th minute through Frolova. The match took a turn for the worse for India when Julan was sent off, leaving them with ten players.
In stoppage time, Russia added a third goal when Alisa Klimova's cross was misjudged by Munni, allowing Bykhanova to score into an empty net, concluding the match with a decisive victory for the hosts.
Upcoming Challenges
India is set to face Australia on May 2, Japan on May 5, and Lebanon in Group B of the AFC U17 Women's Asian Cup 2026 in Suzhou, China.
