India U-20 Team Shines in SAFF Championship
Male [Maldives], March 26: The athletes from Roundglass Punjab FC Academy showcased an outstanding performance, leading the India Under-20 men's football team to a decisive 3-0 win against Pakistan during the SAFF U-20 Championship held in the Maldives.
This thrilling match at the National Football Stadium in Male not only secured the Blue Colts a place in the semifinals but also eliminated Pakistan from the tournament, as reported.
With this impressive victory, the Indian team advanced smoothly to the knockout phase. Their next challenge will be against Bangladesh on March 28, marking the end of their group-stage matches.
The Indian squad started strong, with academy players playing a crucial role in the early breakthrough, contributing to all goals scored in the match. Just three minutes in, Gurnaj Singh showcased his exceptional vision by delivering a perfectly weighted through ball into the box. Vishal Yadav, the third youngest player to debut in the Indian Super League (ISL) for Punjab FC, skillfully controlled the aerial pass under pressure and slotted it past the Pakistan goalkeeper, giving India a 1-0 lead.
Despite Pakistan creating several chances to equalize in the first half, the Indian defense, along with goalkeeper Suraj Aheibam, held firm, making vital saves to keep a clean sheet.
The second half was dominated by Omang Dodum, who scored two goals and was rightfully named Player of the Match, ensuring that all three goals for India came from Punjab FC academy players.
Dodum, the only returning player from India's previous SAFF title-winning squad, maintained his impressive attacking form from last year.
In the 64th minute, Dodum extended India's lead by perfectly timing his run and heading in a brilliant first-time effort from a crossfield diagonal delivered by substitute Rishi.
He capped off a remarkable performance in the final minutes of the match. After teammate Prashan Jajo was fouled inside the box in the 84th minute, Dodum confidently converted the penalty into the top corner in the 88th minute, sealing the score at 3-0.
In addition to the two goal scorers, the Indian U-20 squad includes four more players from the Punjab FC academy, highlighting the club's reputation for having one of the finest youth systems in the nation.
This six-member group, consisting of Vishal, Dodum, Karish Soram, Usham Singh Thoungamba, Rishikanta Meitei Laishram, and Aniket Yadav, formed the backbone of the Punjab FC team that recently clinched the AIFF U-17 Youth League title.
