India's Stellar Performance at Asian Games 2026

On September 29, India celebrated a remarkable Day 10 at the Asian Games 2026 in Aichi-Nagoya, highlighted by Neeru Dhanda's groundbreaking gold medal in the women's trap shooting event. Additionally, the women's 4x400m relay team secured the nation's first athletics gold of the Games.

India amassed a total of eight medals on Tuesday, which included two golds, one silver, and five bronzes across various sports such as shooting, athletics, and boxing.

The women's 4x400m relay team made history by clinching the first athletics gold for India at these Games. The team, consisting of Kiran Pahal, Poovamma MR, Prachi Choudhary, and Vithya Ramraj, finished with a time of 3:29.69, outperforming Bahrain and China, who took silver and bronze, respectively.

Earlier in the day, Neeru Dhanda made history as the first Indian woman to win an individual medal in the women's trap event at the Asian Games, achieving gold with a score of 28 out of 30 in the final. China's Sun Yunong earned silver with 26/30, while UAE's Hajar Abdulmalik took home bronze with 21/25. Neeru also contributed to a silver medal in the women's trap team event alongside Aashima Ahlawat and Manisha Keer, totaling 328 points.

In athletics, Gulveer Singh continued to impress by securing his third medal of the Games, winning bronze in the men's 5000m final with a time of 13:32.75. Bahrain's Birhanu Balew claimed gold with 13:30.79, and Japan's Tomonori Yamaguchi took silver with 13:31.43.

The mixed 4x100m relay team, featuring Gurindervir Singh, Sneha Sathyanarayan, Animesh Kujur, and Harita Bhadra, also earned bronze with a time of 41.06 seconds. China won gold with 40.78 seconds, while Thailand secured silver with 40.87 seconds.

Pooja added another medal to India's athletics tally by winning bronze in the women's high jump final, clearing a height of 1.84m. She achieved this podium finish on countback after a clean record up to that height.

The men's 4x400m relay team, consisting of Dharmveer Choudhary, Manu Thekkinalil, Jay Kumar, and Vishal Thennarasu, also clinched bronze with a time of 3:01.61. Japan took gold with 3:00.75, and Qatar earned silver with 3:00.93.

In boxing, Narender Berwal secured his second consecutive bronze medal in the men's +90kg category after losing in the semifinals to Kazakhstan's reigning world champion Aibek Oralbay. Meanwhile, Parveen and Ankush Panghal advanced to the gold medal matches in their respective categories after winning their semifinal bouts.

Indian pole vaulter Dev Kumar Meena made headlines at the 2026 Asian Games by setting a new national record in the men's pole vault final with a clearance of 5.50m. Although he finished seventh in the event, his achievement marked a significant milestone for Indian pole vaulting.

India also celebrated victories in other events on Tuesday, with the men's volleyball team defeating Qatar 3-2, and the women's squash team advancing to the quarterfinals after a 3-0 win against Iran. Tennis players Sumit Nagal, Dhakshineswar Suresh, and the men's doubles pair of Anirudh Chandrasekar and N Sriram Balaji also progressed in their respective events.

However, the day was not without challenges, as athletes Anushka Yadav and Tanya Chaudhary finished fifth and fourth, respectively, in the women's hammer throw final. Mohammed Afsal placed eighth in the men's 800m final, while Kuldeep Kumar finished 10th in the men's pole vault final. Pooja also ended up seventh in the women's 800m final.

In other competitions, Shapath Bharadwaj finished eighth in the men's trap individual final after qualifying for the medal round. The men's and women's track cycling teams missed out on podium finishes, and surfer Kishore Kumar Anbarasu exited in the men's shortboard quarterfinal. The women's team sprint cycling campaign also concluded after a defeat to Chinese Taipei.
