India Sets Record with 402 Runs Against Afghanistan in Second ODI
India Dominates Afghanistan in Second ODI
In a stunning display of batting, the Indian cricket team, led by Shubman Gill, amassed a remarkable total of 402 runs against Afghanistan during the second ODI of their three-match series at the Bharat Ratna Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ekana Cricket Stadium in Lucknow on June 17 (Wednesday). Both Gill and wicket-keeper Ishan Kishan delivered exceptional centuries, effectively dominating the match and leaving the visitors struggling. This innings allowed India to match a significant world record previously held by South Africa.
India Matches South Africa's Record
With this performance, India achieved its eighth score of over 400 runs in ODIs, tying with South Africa for the most such scores in cricket history. Both teams have reached the 400-run milestone eight times.
Most 400+ Scores in ODIs
8: South Africa/India
7: England
3: Australia
2: New Zealand/Sri Lanka
However, England holds the record for the highest three team totals in men's ODIs, with their 498/4 against the Netherlands in June 2022 still standing as the highest ODI score ever. This match marked the second occasion a team has scored over 400 runs against Afghanistan, the first being Australia's 417/6 in 2015.
Standout Performances by Gill and Kishan
Had it not been for the lower order's struggles, India might have posted an even higher score. Nonetheless, Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan were pivotal in achieving this total. The Afghan bowlers, Rashid Khan and Kharoti, combined for seven wickets, with Kharoti's three quick dismissals impacting India's innings significantly. Kharoti's efforts began with the removal of Gill for 154 runs, followed by KL Rahul's dismissal on the next ball. Despite these setbacks, India was on track for a formidable total. Ishan Kishan's performance, although overshadowing Gill's score, was crucial in the challenging heat. Shreyas Iyer also fell to Kharoti in the following over, with Kharoti finishing with impressive figures of 4/76.
