India Set to Face Pakistan in Women's T20 World Cup 2026 Opener
Intense Rivalry Resumes at Edgbaston
The Indian women's cricket team, led by Harmanpreet Kaur, is gearing up to kick off their Women's T20 World Cup 2026 journey against their long-standing rivals, Pakistan, this Sunday at Edgbaston. Historically, India has had the upper hand in this rivalry, yet encounters with Pakistan are known for their heightened intensity, both on and off the field. A significant point of discussion leading up to the match is whether players from both sides will engage in handshakes.
Since the Men's Asia Cup last year, players from both the men's and women's teams have opted not to shake hands with Pakistan. This trend has continued through various tournaments, including the Women's World Cup, U19 World Cup, Rising Stars Asia Cup, and Men's T20 World Cup.
Harmanpreet Kaur Addresses Handshake Controversy
On the eve of the match, Harmanpreet Kaur was asked about the possibility of handshakes and whether the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) had reached out to her regarding this matter. She responded, "We are here for cricket, and our focus is solely on the game. We don’t discuss anything outside of cricket. From day one, cricket has been our dream, and that’s what we concentrate on. For tomorrow’s match, we view it as just another game we are set to play."
She acknowledged the inevitable pressure that comes with facing Pakistan, stating, "I agree that pressure is always present when we play against Pakistan. However, it’s about how we embrace that pressure. In any international match, pressure exists; it’s crucial to give your all and savor every moment on the field." With a strong head-to-head record and recent performances in their favor, India enters the match as the clear favorite, boasting a 6-2 lead in Women's T20 World Cup encounters and a 13-3 advantage in overall T20Is against Pakistan. Nonetheless, Harmanpreet admitted that pressure is a constant factor. "I can’t deny the pressure; it’s there. Since my days as a fan, I’ve felt it, and now that I’m playing, it’s even more pronounced. Yet, we believe that the more we enjoy the game, the better it is for us, as we are fortunate to be part of such a significant event, and we aim to enjoy our time on the field," she concluded.
