India Triumphs in T20 World Cup Semifinal

Mumbai (Maharashtra) [India], March 6: A host of political figures, including Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, Union Minister Piyush Goyal, and BJP MP Anurag Thakur, celebrated Team India's narrow seven-run victory against England in a nail-biting semifinal of the T20 World Cup 2026, held at Mumbai's Wankhede Stadium on Thursday.

As the defending champions, India, led by captain Suryakumar Yadav, secured their spot in the final against New Zealand after posting a formidable total of 253/7 and successfully defending it against England.

Sanju Samson's explosive innings of 89 runs off just 42 balls set the stage for India's impressive score. Despite a valiant effort from England, highlighted by Jacob Bethell's century, they fell short in the chase.

The match's pivotal moment came from Jasprit Bumrah, whose exceptional bowling helped India clinch the victory by a mere seven runs.

In a statement, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed his joy over India's progression to the final, praising the players' efforts while acknowledging England's strong performance. He confidently stated, 'It is a matter of great delight. India has entered the final. It was a terrific match. Our players performed well. England was good too. India will win the final too.'

Union Minister Piyush Goyal echoed this sentiment, stating, 'There is immense joy. All our players played a splendid game. Heartiest congratulations. Now we will surely win the final too.'

BJP MP Anurag Thakur commended the Indian team's achievement, describing their performance as unprecedented. He noted, 'The Indian team’s reaching the final shows that what the Indian team has done in cricket is unprecedented. Played a splendid match… the match was very close, but there was splendid fielding, splendid batting and splendid bowling.'

India's innings featured a powerful performance from Sanju Samson (89* off 42 balls, including eight fours and seven sixes), along with significant contributions from Shivam Dube (43 off 25 balls), Ishan Kishan (39 off 18 balls), Hardik Pandya (27 off 12 balls), and Tilak Varma (21 off 7 balls), leading to a total of 253 runs in 20 overs.

Despite India reducing England to 95/4, Jacob Bethell (105 off 48 balls) and Will Jacks (35 off 20 balls) mounted a strong counterattack, forming a crucial 77-run partnership for the fifth wicket.

The turning point arrived in the 18th over, where Jasprit Bumrah's brilliant bowling limited England to just six runs, putting them under pressure as they needed 45 runs from the last three overs. Hardik Pandya followed up with an excellent over, conceding only nine runs and taking the wicket of Sam Curran.

Although Bethell continued to push for victory and Jofra Archer's quick-fire 19 runs brought England close, they ultimately finished at 246/7, just seven runs shy of India's total.

For India, standout bowlers included Jasprit Bumrah (1/33 in 4 overs), Axar Patel (1/35 in 3 overs), and Hardik Pandya (2/38 in 4 overs).

The final match is scheduled to take place in Ahmedabad, where India aims to maintain their winning streak and secure another ICC title against New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium on March 8.
