India Triumphs in AFC Asian Cup Qualifiers

Kochi (Kerala) [India], March 31: India celebrated a long-awaited victory in Kochi, narrowly defeating Hong Kong 2-1 in their concluding match of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Asian Cup Saudi Arabia 2027 Qualifiers at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Tuesday.

Debutant Ryan Williams and left-back Akash Mishra scored early in each half, securing the Blue Tigers' first win in the qualifying series. India concluded their campaign with five points, comprising one win, two draws, and three losses. Singapore emerged as group leaders with 14 points, qualifying for the Asian Cup, according to a press release.

Head Coach Khalid Jamil gave a much-anticipated debut to Ryan Williams, while Bijoy Varghese also made his first appearance for India off the bench.

The match kicked off perfectly for India, with Ryan Williams scoring in just the fourth minute of play. A quick transition down the right side saw Abhishek Singh Tekcham deliver a precise pass to Manvir Singh, who set up Williams for a simple tap-in past the goalkeeper, marking a historic debut goal.

This goal was the fastest ever scored by a debutant for India, breaking the previous record of a sixth-minute goal by K Appalaraju against Ceylon (Sri Lanka) in 1963 and Mehtab Hossain against Nepal in the 2005 SAFF Cup.

With the lead, the home team played confidently, dominating possession and controlling the game's pace.

Manvir Singh attempted to find Lallianzuala Chhangte with a cross, but a Hong Kong defender managed to clear the threat.

The Indian defense effectively stifled Hong Kong's attackers, consistently surrounding them with multiple players whenever a scoring opportunity arose. They remained vigilant, ensuring that the visitors struggled to create chances.

India looked threatening on counter-attacks. Williams received a pass from midfield, relaying it to Manvir on the right, who flicked it to Chhangte. The winger's shot with his weaker right foot was blocked by Hong Kong defender Shinichi Chan, resulting in a corner.

Apuia nearly extended India's lead in the 25th minute, following a swift counter-attack involving Manvir Singh and Ryan Williams. However, his long-range effort went just wide of the post.

Hong Kong attempted to build their attacks patiently, working the ball into wide areas and delivering crosses, but the Indian defense handled them comfortably, maintaining their one-goal advantage at halftime.

The Blue Tigers started the second half with the same intensity as the first. A long throw from Rahul Bheke was not cleared by the Hong Kong defense, and Akash Mishra reacted quickly at the near post, scoring his first international goal with a right-footed shot from a tight angle, doubling India's lead.

However, Hong Kong managed to breach India's defense shortly after the hour mark. Braunshtain Barak found space between Sandesh Jhingan and Rahul Bheke, slipping a pass to Everton Camargo, who finished past Gurpreet to reduce the deficit.
