India Prepares for Crucial Test Series Against Sri Lanka

India is gearing up to return to Test cricket with an important two-match series against Sri Lanka, commencing on August 15. This series will be the first for the Shubman Gill-led team in the 2025-27 World Test Championship (WTC), following a disappointing 2-0 defeat to South Africa at home last November. The team is under pressure as they risk missing the final for the second consecutive time. Currently, India sits fifth in the standings with a point percentage of 48.15 after three series. To secure a spot in the final for the third time, they must win seven out of their remaining nine matches, which include two away games against Sri Lanka, two against New Zealand, and five at home against Australia.
Despite the challenges in Test cricket, selecting the squad appears manageable. The core of the team will likely consist of players who participated in the one-off Test against Afghanistan in June, which was not part of the WTC. Veteran players Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja are expected to return after being rested for that match, potentially replacing uncapped players Gurnoor Brar and Harsh Dubey.
However, injuries to Nitish Kumar Reddy and Washington Sundar pose a challenge. Both all-rounders have been crucial under Gautam Gambhir's leadership. If Reddy is unable to play, India may opt for a specialist batter, possibly giving opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad or Sarfaraz Khan. Sundar's absence could allow Harsh to keep his place, resulting in three left-arm spinners in the squad alongside Jadeja and Manav Suthar. If an off-spinner is needed, 33-year-old Saransh Jain, who was recently selected for India 'A', could be the choice, despite never having been called up to the national team before.
Sai Sudharsan is likely to maintain his position at number three, despite inconsistent performances, while Devdutt Padikkal will serve as the reserve batter. Mohammed Siraj is expected to return after missing the recent white-ball series in the UK and Zimbabwe, and Prasidh Krishna will also remain in the squad, forming a pace trio with Bumrah. Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul are set as the opening pair, with no additional reserve opener anticipated, as both Sudharsan and Padikkal can step in if necessary.
Despite losing his vice-captaincy and facing criticism from Gambhir prior to the Afghanistan Test, Rishabh Pant continues to be a standout player in the longest format and will serve as the primary wicketkeeper-batter, with Dhruv Jurel as his backup.
