India Prepares for 2027 ODI World Cup with New Zealand Series
India's Focus Shifts to ODI World Cup
Auckland [New Zealand], November 3: As Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli make their return to the one-day format, the Indian cricket team is gearing up for the 2027 ODI World Cup. The team will kick off a five-match series against New Zealand at Eden Park on Wednesday.
The inclusion of these two seasoned players allows the team to evaluate its combinations and strategize for the upcoming World Cup, which is set to take place in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia. This series also presents Shubman Gill, who will captain India, with a chance to refine the team's plans with less than a year remaining before the tournament.
Having recently clinched the T20I series 3-2, the Men in Blue are looking to maintain their momentum in the ODI format. They had established a commanding 3-0 lead before New Zealand made a comeback by winning the last two matches. The visitors aim to carry this winning spirit into the longer format, while the hosts will seek to build on their late resurgence.
Eden Park, known for its high-scoring T20I matches, may present a different challenge in the 50-over format. The venue is recognized for its bounce, wind conditions, and unique dimensions, with the ODI pitch expected to favor seam bowlers more than the flatter T20I surface.
New Zealand's captain, Mitchell Santner, acknowledged the formidable challenge posed by India's experienced batting lineup, especially with Rohit and Kohli back in action.
“We’ve had great crowds during the T20 series, and I anticipate that will continue with Rohit and Virat in the lineup. They are exceptional players, and despite their advancing years, they continue to perform at a high level, as demonstrated in their recent series against the West Indies,” Santner remarked during a pre-match press briefing.
He emphasized that his bowling unit must maintain discipline and apply pressure consistently, particularly if the conditions are favorable.
“If we can penetrate their top order, especially with Shubman Gill, who has been outstanding over the last five years, we can position ourselves well. In one-day cricket, it’s crucial to bowl consistently good deliveries and build pressure over time,” he added.
India will miss Jasprit Bumrah and Hardik Pandya, placing significant responsibility on their relatively young pace attack. Gill mentioned that the team is focusing on taller fast bowlers capable of generating bounce, especially as the ball ages and movement decreases.
He also indicated that the middle-order batting positions would remain adaptable, with options like Axar Patel and KL Rahul available depending on the match scenario.
“For us, positions five, six, and seven are flexible. Our top four are quite settled, all being right-handed batters. Depending on the situation, if we need a left-hander at number five, we can bring in Axar Patel. Similarly, if the platform is set, we can opt for KL Rahul based on the match context,” Gill explained.
Gill pointed out that the conditions at Eden Park will also play a crucial role, especially with the late start and the potential for increased movement under lights.
“This is my first experience playing so late, starting at 3 PM. I’m unsure how the conditions will behave in the second innings, whether we are batting or bowling. With two new balls, there might be more swing, bounce, and seam at night, making it exciting to see how the weather and pitch perform,” Gill noted.
New Zealand will be without Devon Conway for the opening match due to a concussion sustained during a fielding drill. The availability of Matt Henry is also uncertain, while Mark Chapman and Rachin Ravindra are already out of the squad.
For India, Shreyas Iyer is anticipated to return to the playing XI, and Axar Patel could enhance both the spin-bowling and batting options. This five-match series will be crucial for both teams to test their combinations and evaluate their readiness for the 2027 World Cup.
