India's Stance on Sports Relations with Pakistan

New Delhi [India], May 6: The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports has confirmed that the suspension of bilateral sports relations between India and Pakistan will continue. However, athletes from both nations will still be allowed to participate in multilateral international competitions, including those held in India.

In a memorandum released on Wednesday, the ministry emphasized that India's sports interactions with Pakistan are consistent with its broader diplomatic strategy.

According to the circular, "India's stance on sports events involving Pakistan mirrors its overall diplomatic policy towards that nation."

The government has made it clear that there will be no resumption of direct sporting events between the two countries, stating, "Indian teams will not compete in Pakistan, nor will we allow Pakistani teams to play in India." This communication was directed to key stakeholders, including the Indian Olympic Association, Sports Authority of India, and all National Sports Federations.

This directive effectively maintains the long-standing suspension of bilateral sports engagements, particularly in cricket.

Nonetheless, the ministry differentiated between bilateral engagements and international competitions governed by global sports organizations, reaffirming India's commitment to the international sporting framework.

"Indian teams and individual athletes will participate in international events that include teams or players from Pakistan. Likewise, Pakistani athletes and teams will be permitted to compete in such multilateral events hosted by India," the circular clarified.

This approach aligns with international sporting standards and ensures that Indian athletes are not at a disadvantage in global competitions due to geopolitical issues.

The ministry also highlighted India's aspirations to become a leading destination for international sporting events, emphasizing the importance of administrative efficiency and adherence to global standards.

To facilitate this, the visa process for athletes, team officials, technical staff, and representatives of International Sports Governing Bodies will be streamlined, as stated in the memorandum.

In a notable development, the government announced that officials from international sports organizations will receive priority multi-entry visas for the duration of their tenure, which can last up to five years. It also assured that "appropriate protocol and courtesies will be extended to the Heads of International Sports Governing Bodies during their visits to India."

This clarification comes amid ongoing sensitivities in India-Pakistan relations and coincides with the anniversary of Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7 last year in response to the Pahalgam terror attack that resulted in the loss of 26 civilian lives.

While the suspension of bilateral engagements remains firmly in place, this latest directive ensures that India remains aligned with international sporting frameworks, balancing diplomatic concerns with the interests of its athletes and global ambitions.
