Khelo India Initiative Approved by Union Cabinet

On Wednesday, the Union Cabinet greenlit the Khelo India sports goods manufacturing initiative, allocating Rs 1,857 crore to enhance local production, lessen reliance on imports, and increase exports. The government anticipates that this initiative will draw in investments totaling approximately Rs 6,800 crore. The focus is not only on reinforcing established sports equipment manufacturing centers like Jalandhar and Meerut but also on creating new ones.

This initiative, set to run from 2026 to 2034, aims to position India as a competitive global player in the sports goods manufacturing sector.

During a press conference following the Cabinet meeting, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw noted that India's sports goods manufacturing is primarily concentrated in three clusters, with micro, small, and medium enterprises (MSMEs) making up the majority of production.

“New hubs will be established,” he emphasized, pointing out the government's commitment to expanding beyond traditional products to include items such as archery bows, kabaddi mats, and pellets for shooting sports.

A key aspect of the initiative is to attract investments from both domestic and international manufacturers, sports brands, and retail chains.

Through the Anchor Investment Support component, prominent manufacturers and brands will be incentivized to set up operations within designated sports goods manufacturing zones (SGMZs).

The turnover-linked support component will encourage increased production, capacity growth, and sustained manufacturing development.

Additionally, Rs 105 crore has been earmarked to assist manufacturers in obtaining and renewing certifications from international sports federations.

Vaishnaw also confirmed that the existing benefits for manufacturers under the remission of duties and taxes on exported products (RoDTEP) scheme will remain in effect.

The initiative also includes plans to establish centers of excellence at top educational and research institutions to foster innovation in sports equipment and materials.
