Amstelveen [Netherlands], August 15: India commenced their FIH Hockey World Cup 2026 journey with a convincing 3-1 victory against Wales in Pool D. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who was named Player of the Match, expressed pride in the team's performance and their determination to clinch the World Cup title.
Harmanpreet highlighted the importance of creating more scoring opportunities and emphasized the need for increased field goals in their upcoming match.
The Indian Men's Team showcased their skills at the Wagener Hockey Stadium, defeating Wales 3-1. Their next challenge will be against England on August 17 at the same venue.
Reflecting on the match, Harmanpreet stated, “We had a strong start. I’m pleased that one of our young talents, Sanjay, scored the opening goal. It was a solid performance overall. We understand the significance of this World Cup and are focused on winning. In our next game, we need to create more chances and score field goals.”
India's goals were scored by Sanjay (8') and Harmanpreet Singh (11', 43'), with the captain converting two penalty corners, showcasing his crucial role in set pieces. Wales managed to score through Sam Welsh (56'), but India's defense held strong in the final moments to secure the win.
Wales started the match with energy, attempting to make an early impact with several circle entries. Goalkeeper Suraj Karkera was quick to respond to the threats. As the game progressed, India found their rhythm, earning their first circle entry in the seventh minute, which resulted in a penalty corner after Dilpreet Singh created an opportunity.
Wales' initial rusher blocked Sanjay's first drag-flick, but a foot foul allowed India a retake. Sanjay capitalized on the second chance, slipping the ball past Welsh goalkeeper Toby Reynolds-Cotterill to give India the lead in the eighth minute.
India nearly doubled their lead shortly after when Jarmanpreet Singh's reverse hit just missed the target. Another penalty corner was awarded in the 11th minute, and Harmanpreet stepped up to convert, extending India's lead to 2-0.
Continuing their pressure, India earned another penalty corner in the 13th minute, but Wales managed to defend it. Shilanand Lakra briefly left the field after an injury, but India maintained their two-goal advantage at the end of the first quarter.
In the second quarter, India dominated possession, with Manpreet Singh earning another penalty corner. Wales threatened on a counter-attack in the 19th minute, but goalkeeper Mohith HS made a crucial save.
Despite several opportunities from Indian players like Abhishek and Mandeep Singh, the score remained 2-0 at halftime.
Wales attempted to regain momentum in the third quarter, but India's defense remained steadfast. Harmanpreet's long pass found Lakra, and Abhishek had another chance as India sought to extend their lead.
The third goal came in the 43rd minute when Harmanpreet scored from a penalty corner, firing a powerful flick past the Welsh goalkeeper, making it 3-0.
In the final quarter, India continued to create chances, with Lakra coming close to scoring. Wales earned a penalty corner in the 54th minute, but Mohith made an excellent save.
Wales managed to score in the 56th minute after a video review confirmed that the ball had crossed the line, with Sam Welsh credited for the goal, bringing the score to 3-1.
India maintained their composure in the closing minutes, creating more opportunities but ultimately securing a 3-1 victory to start their World Cup campaign on a high note.
