India Kicks Off AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 Campaign Against Australia
India's Journey Begins in Jeddah
On May 5, India embarks on its fourth continental journey of the year, facing Australia in the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2026 at King Abdullah Sports City Pitch C in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia.
The Blue Colts find themselves in Group D, competing against Australia and Uzbekistan, following the withdrawal of DPR Korea just days before the tournament, as stated in a release from the All India Football Federation (AIFF).
Head coach Bibiano Fernandes, who has experience in this age group from previous tournaments like the AFC U16 Championship 2018 and the AFC U17 Asian Cup 2023, is well-prepared. Although he has faced various challenges, his strategy remains consistent.
“With experience, you learn to navigate the demands of this level more effectively. Each tournament presents its own challenges, but expectations are always high. It’s crucial to maintain composure, focus on preparation, and guide players through various scenarios,” Fernandes shared with the AIFF.
Despite facing a formidable opponent in Australia, who have reached the semi-finals three times, the Blue Colts are determined to concentrate on their performance.
“Australia is a strong team, known for their physicality, organization, and high-intensity play. They are disciplined and pose a threat during transitions. Our priority is to perform well as a cohesive unit,” Fernandes emphasized.
“We aim to stay organized, compact, and make sound decisions with the ball. In our opening match, it’s vital to maintain focus from the outset and avoid lapses in concentration,” he added. “We want to play clearly and seize opportunities as they arise.”
The India U17 squad has undergone extensive preparation for the Asian Cup, competing against teams such as Tajikistan, Turkiye, Myanmar, Indonesia, Thailand, Korea Republic, UAE, and Qatar prior to their arrival in Jeddah.
Fernandes believes this preparation has positioned the players well for the tournament. “The boys are in a positive mindset. They are motivated and aware of their responsibilities. There’s always excitement before the first match, but the focus is on remaining calm and executing our game plan,” he stated.
Captain Dallalmoun Gangte expressed his gratitude for the role, saying, “I feel honored to lead this team. I’m committed to giving my all for the best possible outcome. Australia is a strong opponent, but our preparation and mindset are what matter most as we head into the game.”
The top two teams from each group will advance to the quarter-finals of the AFC U17 Asian Cup, also securing a spot in the FIFA U17 World Cup Qatar 2026.
