India Faces Kohli's Absence in ODI Series Against Afghanistan
Kohli Ruled Out, Rohit Returns for ODI Series
Dharamsala (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 12: Morne Morkel, the bowling coach for Team India, announced that Virat Kohli will not participate in the upcoming three-match ODI series against Afghanistan due to a hamstring injury. This absence is a significant blow for the Men in Blue, as Kohli's experience is invaluable. Morkel, however, expressed enthusiasm for Rohit Sharma's return, noting that Rohit is eager to play in the series opener.
India will commence the ODI series following their victory in a one-off Test against Afghanistan, with the first match scheduled for June 13 in Dharamsala.
Both Kohli and Rohit have been under scrutiny regarding their fitness, particularly since they are now focused solely on ODIs. Kohli's injury occurred during the IPL 2026 final, while Rohit has been recovering from his own hamstring issues at the Centre of Excellence.
Morkel emphasized the impact of Kohli's absence, particularly his ability to stabilize the innings during crucial middle overs. He stated, “Virat is a significant miss for us. His experience and the way he manages his innings in the middle phase are qualities we will miss. Unfortunately, injuries are beyond our control, but this opens up a chance for someone else to step up in this series, and we are looking forward to that.”
Conversely, Morkel welcomed Rohit Sharma back into the squad, highlighting the positive influence of his experience and composure. He mentioned that Rohit is training effectively and is keen to make his mark in the ODI series against Afghanistan.
“Having Rohit back is always beneficial. His calm demeanor in the dressing room is a great asset. He’s training well and moving freely, and I know he’s excited to play tomorrow,” Morkel added.
