India's Challenge Against England's 'Bazball'

Leeds [UK], June 23: As Team India prepares to defend a formidable total of 371 runs, they face a significant challenge against an aggressive England side known for their 'Bazball' approach. Historically, India has performed well when defending scores of 350 or more.

In his debut as captain, Shubman Gill will lead a team buoyed by centuries from Yashasvi Jaiswal, himself, KL Rahul, and Rishabh Pant, totaling five centuries across both innings. However, the task of managing England's explosive openers, Zak Crawley and Ben Duckett, along with the consistent Joe Root and rising star Harry Brook, will be crucial.

India boasts an impressive record in Test matches when defending totals of 350 or higher, having won 42 out of 59 matches, with only one loss and 16 draws. That sole defeat occurred against England at Edgbaston in 2022, where they chased down 378 runs with ease, led by centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow.

In the ongoing Test at Headingley, England ended Day 4 at 21/0, with Crawley and Duckett remaining unbeaten, setting the stage for an exciting final day. The opening pair's cautious approach kept them safe, as they aimed to chase down the 371-run target.

During their innings, Crawley struck back-to-back boundaries off Mohammed Siraj, helping England maintain momentum. However, India's lower order faltered again, collapsing from 349/6 to 364 in just five overs, with Brydon Carse dismissing KL Rahul, who scored a commendable 137 runs.

The crowd at Headingley applauded Rahul's performance, but the Indian batting order struggled to maintain their earlier form. Karun Nair's dismissal to Chris Woakes marked the beginning of a batting collapse, with Josh Tongue taking two wickets in quick succession.

Ravindra Jadeja managed to add some runs with a six and a four, but ultimately, India's innings concluded at 364 after Prasidh Krishna's aggressive attempt against Shoaib Bashir led to his dismissal.

The stark contrast in performance between India's top five batters and the lower order was evident, as the top half scored 721 runs, while the bottom six could only muster 65 runs, contributing to India's struggles.

At Tea, India was positioned at 298/4, with KL Rahul and Karun Nair at the crease. Rishabh Pant also made a significant contribution, scoring 118 runs in the second innings, forming a vital partnership with Rahul.

Despite an early setback with Shubman Gill's dismissal for just eight runs, India managed to set a solid foundation for the remainder of the match, although they provided England with opportunities.

Due to rain, the final session on Day 3 was shortened, with India concluding at 90/2.

Brief Scores: India: 471 and 364 (KL Rahul 137, Rishabh Pant 118, Brydon Carse 2/62) vs England 21/0 (Zak Crawley 12*, Ben Duckett 9*).
