Strengthening Sports Governance in India

New Delhi [India], May 28: In a pivotal move to bolster the governance framework of sports in India and improve operational efficiency within National Sports Federations (NSFs), the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports (MYAS) alongside the Sports Authority of India (SAI) is planning to introduce specialized NSF IT Consultants as part of the National Sports Digital Ecosystem (NSDE).

Union Minister of Youth Affairs and Sports, Mansukh Mandaviya, highlighted the significance of this initiative, stating, “This program aims to refine federation-specific digital systems, facilitating better planning for competitions, national coaching camps, athlete participation, governance processes, and real-time coordination as India gears up for a robust sporting framework ahead of the 2030 Commonwealth Games and its long-term Olympic aspirations.”

In recent years, MYAS and SAI have made strides in digitizing essential operational interfaces with NSFs through various platforms, including the Annual Renewal portal, Annual Calendar for Training & Competition (ACTC), Games Management System (GMS), Sports for Women portal, National Sports Repository System (NSRS), and forthcoming DigiLocker integrations. These advancements have greatly enhanced transparency, accountability, athlete tracking, fund oversight, and governance within the sports sector.

As federations increasingly engage in multiple digital workflows—such as annual recognition and compliance, competition calendar management, athlete and coach mapping, Games nominations, result uploads, financial documentation, and DigiLocker-linked certifications—the demand for dedicated digital coordination support at the federation level has become crucial.

The NSF IT Consultants are envisioned as resources to assist NSFs in the effective onboarding, operationalization, and coordination of digital systems within the NSDE framework.

These consultants will aid federations in various tasks, including creating ACTC calendars and proposals, managing athlete and official nominations on Games Management Systems, submitting annual renewals, uploading tournament results for DigiLocker integration, validating NSRS profiles, managing reports and records, and facilitating digital communication with SAI and MYAS.

This initiative is anticipated to significantly enhance efficiency in planning for competition participation and managing national camps by ensuring timely processing of athlete data, schedules, nominations, and approvals. It is also expected to minimize operational coordination gaps, enhance data quality, improve adherence to timelines, and allow federations to concentrate more effectively on athlete development and sporting excellence.

The NSF IT Consultant framework represents a new phase in the evolution of India’s sports governance ecosystem, transitioning from isolated digitization to a cohesive, athlete-focused, and federation-supported digital infrastructure.

As India ramps up its preparations for the 2030 Commonwealth Games and aims for a historic medal tally on home ground, the enhancement of digital governance systems is poised to play a vital role in refining athlete management, competition readiness, performance monitoring, and institutional coordination across the sports landscape.

Through the integrated framework of NSDE, NSRS, federation support systems, and NSF IT Consultants, the Government seeks to establish a seamless, transparent, and technology-driven sports ecosystem that aligns with the vision of greater transparency, fostering a stronger sporting nation and a Viksit Bharat.
