India's Strong Start in the Asia Cup

In a commanding performance, Shafali Verma's explosive 64 laid the groundwork for India's impressive 94-run victory over Thailand during their Women's T20 Asia Cup opener on Sunday. Verma's innings featured eight boundaries and three sixes, coming off just 36 deliveries.

Despite a dramatic collapse triggered by Thailand's spinners, particularly Suleeporn Laomi who took three wickets, India managed to post a total of 159/9. This score proved more than sufficient as Thailand was bowled out for a mere 65 runs in 16.1 overs.

Deepti Sharma, in her 150th T20I match, delivered a remarkable performance, taking three wickets in just seven balls without conceding a single run. This achievement elevated her to 171 wickets, making her the leading wicket-taker in Women's T20I history.

The 29-year-old allrounder became only the third Indian, following Harmanpreet Kaur and Smriti Mandhana, to reach the 150 T20I milestone. She had previously equaled Thailand's Thipatcha Putthawong at 170 wickets after claiming two wickets in the ninth over, leaving Thailand struggling at 44/6.

Deepti's first delivery in the 17th over dismissed wicketkeeper-batter Nannapat Koncharoenkai, who had been the only resistance for Thailand with a score of 41. Seam bowlers Kranti Goud (1/26) and Nandani Sharma (3/18) quickly took out both Thai openers, while left-arm spinner Shree Charani (2/10) and Deepti effectively dismantled the chase.

Charani struck twice in consecutive overs, and Deepti's double-wicket maiden over effectively sealed Thailand's fate, reducing them to 44/6 within nine overs. Despite a late batting collapse, India secured a decisive win to kick off their Asia Cup campaign on a high note in Group A. Their next match is against Hong Kong on Thursday.

For Thailand, this marked their first defeat after two matches, having previously secured a narrow six-run victory over Hong Kong.
