India Dominates South Africa with Historic 6-1 Victory in Women's Hockey World Cup
India's Historic Win at FIH Women's Hockey World Cup 2026
Amstelveen [Netherlands], August 18: In a stunning display of skill and teamwork, India triumphed over South Africa with a score of 6-1, securing the top position in Pool D at the FIH Women’s Hockey World Cup 2026. This victory marks India's largest win in the tournament's history.
From the very beginning at Wagener Stadium, India showcased their dominance, taking the lead in the 11th minute. A well-coordinated passing sequence on the left flank set up Sakshi Rana, whose shot found Sunelita Toppo at the far post, allowing her to score effortlessly.
In the second quarter, Navneet Kaur extended India's lead with a powerful slap shot from a penalty corner, marking her second goal of the tournament.
Continuing their offensive, India increased their advantage in the 25th minute when Deepika Sehrawat's drag-flick deflected to Sushila Chanu, who skillfully guided the ball past the South African goalkeeper, making it 3-0.
At halftime, India held a three-goal lead, but head coach Sjoerd Marijne urged his players to elevate their intensity.
The team responded immediately after the break, with Deepika scoring her second goal in the 38th minute with a fierce tomahawk shot. Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana added to the tally in the closing minutes of the third quarter.
Lalremsiami netted her goal in the 44th minute, followed by Sakshi's strike just a minute later, both coming from powerful tomahawks, pushing India's lead to 6-0.
South Africa managed to score a consolation goal in the 55th minute when Kayla de Waal capitalized on a deflection from a penalty corner.
This victory eclipsed India's previous record for the largest win in World Cup history, which was a 4-1 victory over Spain in the inaugural 1974 tournament.
With this win, India now leads Pool D and is well-positioned to progress to the next round. Following China's 4-2 win over England earlier, India only requires a draw against England in their final pool match to secure their advancement.
India's last match in Pool D is scheduled against England on Thursday, August 20.
