India's Strong Start in the T20 World Cup

India showcased their prowess in the ICC Women’s T20 World Cup 2026 by securing a decisive 95-run victory against the Netherlands in Leeds, positioning themselves at the top of Group A.

In a discussion on JioStar’s ‘Adidas Match Centre Live’, Indian batter Shafali Verma shared insights on the team's strong performance and the valuable advice she received from senior players like Smriti Mandhana and Harmanpreet Kaur.

Verma expressed her satisfaction, stating, 'Winning our first two matches in the T20 World Cup feels fantastic. Both victories came with significant margins, which is vital in a tournament setting. The dressing room atmosphere is uplifting, and we aim to maintain our winning streak to secure a semi-final spot without any last-minute stress. Everything is progressing as planned; our batting is effective, the bowlers are performing well, and our fielding is sharp. We must sustain this momentum in the upcoming matches. Each game is crucial, and we are not taking anything lightly. Our focus is on continuous improvement and the ultimate goal of lifting the trophy.'

Reflecting on her performance, Verma noted the guidance from Mandhana at the start of her innings, saying, 'In the previous match against Pakistan, I felt rushed and my shot selection was off. However, against the Netherlands, I simplified my approach. I focused on watching the ball and reacting without overthinking. The shots flowed naturally, and I targeted deliveries within my hitting range. It felt instinctive. I reminded myself to play along the ground, and Smriti didi emphasized the importance of closely watching the ball. This seemingly minor detail significantly impacts a batter's performance, aiding in balance and timing. Our ongoing communication throughout the innings was crucial for my focus.'

Following their victories over Pakistan and the Netherlands, the Indian women's team is set to take on South Africa next.

Verma added, 'We have a couple of days for practice before facing South Africa. We understand that every match from here on is vital. Complacency is not an option. Everyone needs to remain vigilant and focused in all aspects—batting, bowling, and fielding. In a World Cup, no match can be taken lightly. Each opponent poses a challenge, and every game counts. As players, we must give our all, not just for ourselves but for the team. When everyone contributes their best, the team's dynamics change. The energy, commitment, and execution improve significantly. Our mindset is straightforward: we aim to win every match. We are not preoccupied with outcomes; instead, we concentrate on the process and strive to perform our best in every game.'
