India Dominates Bangladesh with a Stunning 13-0 Victory in Asian Champions Trophy Opener
A Historic Evening for Indian Hockey
On Tuesday evening, the Olympian Surjit Singh Hockey Stadium was alive with excitement as Punjab hosted its first international hockey match in years. The event featured a captivating drone display celebrating the region's rich hockey heritage, dazzling fireworks, and a lively cultural showcase. Amidst this vibrant atmosphere, India kicked off their Asian Champions Trophy (ACT) campaign with an astonishing 13-0 win over Bangladesh, marking a significant moment in Indian hockey history.
This victory marked the third consecutive occasion since 2023 that India scored over ten goals against Bangladesh, achieving their largest winning margin against them since 2013.
Bangladesh, stepping in for Pakistan who opted out of traveling to India for the ACT, appeared to be the least competitive team in the tournament. India seized the opportunity, securing all three points in front of an enthusiastic crowd.
The match felt almost like a training session for the home team, who wasted no time in finding the net. Captain Harmanpreet Singh, who had played on this very ground as a child, opened the scoring with a powerful drag-flick from the first penalty corner awarded to India.
Before the crowd could fully settle, local hero Mandeep Singh doubled the lead just three minutes into the game, showcasing India's early dominance.
With a comfortable two-goal advantage, India controlled the game, utilizing the wings effectively and maintaining possession before striking at the right moments. Mandeep soon made it 3-0, further asserting India's control.
As the match progressed, India began to experiment with their tactics, relying on swift counter-attacks. In the 15th minute, Sukhjeet Singh initiated a quick move, supported by Shilanand Lakra, who calmly slotted the ball home, ending the first quarter at 4-0.
The second quarter saw two more goals, with Abhishek and Nilakanta Sharma adding to Bangladesh's woes. The third quarter followed suit, with Dilpreet Singh scoring twice and Harmanpreet converting another penalty corner.
Despite expectations to ease off in the final quarter, India continued their relentless pursuit of goals, adding four more before the final whistle to secure a remarkable 13-0 victory.
The fourth quarter began with Jugraj Singh scoring from a penalty corner, while Mandeep completed his hat-trick in the 54th minute. Veteran midfielder Hardik Singh, who had been quiet earlier, capped off the evening with two final goals, making it a night to remember for the hosts.
