India Clinches T20I Series with Stunning Performance Against New Zealand
India's Dominant Victory in T20I Series
Wellington [New Zealand], October 27: Shreyas Iyer, the captain of India's T20I team, praised the remarkable batting display by Abhishek Sharma and the young talent Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, calling it "absolutely stunning". Their explosive performance led India to a six-wicket victory over New Zealand in the third T20I, securing a commanding 3-0 lead in the five-match series.
Iyer expressed his admiration during the post-match presentation, stating, "It was pleasing to the eyes the way they played strokes. When Sanju and I came to bat, the ball was seaming, and I was amazed at how they managed it. It was simply mind-boggling."
Sharma delivered an impressive 113 runs off just 38 balls, featuring 11 sixes and nine fours, while Sooryavanshi added 45 runs from 19 balls, helping India chase down New Zealand's target of 199 in a mere 13.2 overs, with 40 balls remaining.
When asked if this performance was among the best he had seen, Iyer noted that their scoring rate was extraordinary, even by international standards. "Honestly speaking, scoring 100 in 5 overs is something I've never witnessed before, especially at this level. It definitely tops it," he remarked.
India's innings began with a bang as Sharma and Sooryavanshi amassed 26 runs in the first over bowled by Jacob Duffy. They continued their aggressive approach, reaching 64 without loss in just three overs and an astonishing 118 without loss by the end of the Powerplay.
Sharma reached his half-century in just 15 balls and completed his century in 35 deliveries. Although Sooryavanshi was dismissed for 45 by Matthew Fisher in the eighth over, Sharma kept the momentum going alongside Sanju Samson.
Iyer highlighted the significance of this performance, especially in adapting to foreign conditions. "It's crucial, particularly when playing overseas. The conditions differ, and you face various challenges. Overcoming this with such phenomenal performance deserves credit. Winning the series with this match and two more to go, I hope they maintain this form. It's amazing how the lads rose to the occasion despite jet lag at the start," he said.
Earlier, New Zealand batted first and scored 198/3, with Daryl Mitchell leading the charge with an unbeaten 89 runs off 52 balls. Bevon Jacobs contributed 39 runs off 23 balls, while Finn Allen added 40 runs from 25 balls. Mitchell and Jacobs formed a crucial 75-run partnership for the fourth wicket, propelling the hosts to a competitive total.
Iyer also explained India's strategy of using yorkers as New Zealand's batters continued to score freely. "After 10 overs, I noticed that anything they bowled, whether hard length or half volleys, was going for runs. I instructed the bowlers to focus on yorkers, even if it meant bowling six in a row. This tactic helped us restrict their run rate to eight or nine, keeping them under 200," he elaborated.
For India, Arshdeep Singh, Axar Patel, and Nitish Kumar Reddy each took a wicket. On the New Zealand side, Kyle Jamieson claimed two wickets, while Fisher and Mitchell Santner took one each.
With the series already in their grasp at 3-0, India aims to continue their winning streak in the remaining matches, while New Zealand seeks to recover.
