India Clinches T20I Series Against Afghanistan with Dominant Win
India Secures Series Victory
In a thrilling encounter at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in New Delhi on Tuesday, India triumphed over Afghanistan by seven wickets, thereby clinching a 2-0 lead in the three-match T20I series.
Opting to bowl first, India successfully limited Afghanistan to a score of 159 runs for the loss of 8 wickets in their allotted 20 overs. Captain Ibrahim Zadran was the top scorer for Afghanistan with 37 runs, while Rashid Khan added a quick 28 runs off just 16 balls. Nitish Kumar Reddy emerged as the star bowler for India, claiming 3 wickets for 24 runs, supported by Arshdeep Singh who took 2 wickets.
In pursuit of 160 runs, India started aggressively, with openers Sanju Samson and Abhishek Sharma putting up a formidable 82 runs in the first six overs.
The fifth over saw Samson unleash a flurry of boundaries, hitting three fours and a six off Azmatullah Omarzai, which helped India accumulate 20 runs in that over.
The momentum continued to build as India scored 27 runs in the next over, with Samson hitting two sixes and two fours, while Abhishek also cleared the boundary once, leading India to a commanding 82/0 at the end of the powerplay.
Afghanistan managed to break the partnership in the seventh over when Rashid Khan dismissed both Samson and Abhishek. However, by that time, India had already reached 99 runs for 2 wickets. Samson's explosive innings concluded at 57 runs off just 22 balls, while Abhishek contributed a brisk 39 runs off 19 deliveries.
Rashid Khan struck again in the 11th over, taking out Indian captain Shreyas Iyer, but Afghanistan could not capitalize on this breakthrough. Ishan Kishan, who remained unbeaten on 38, and Tilak Varma, who scored 15 not out, guided India to victory, finishing at 163/3 in just 14.5 overs.
Rashid Khan was the standout bowler for Afghanistan, taking three wickets, including those of Samson, Abhishek, and Shreyas Iyer.
Earlier in the match, India's disciplined bowling attack, led by Nitish Kumar Reddy's impressive three-wicket haul, kept Afghanistan to a modest total of 159/8.
After winning the toss, Indian captain Shreyas Iyer chose to bowl first and made one change to the lineup, bringing in leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi to replace Varun Chakaravarthy, who was sidelined due to a side strain.
India struck early, with Arshdeep Singh dismissing explosive opener Rahmanullah Gurbaz for a duck in the second over. However, Sediqullah Atal and Ibrahim Zadran steadied the innings, guiding Afghanistan to 41/1 by the end of the powerplay.
Nitish Kumar Reddy made an immediate impact, taking out Afghanistan's captain Ibrahim Zadran for 37 runs with his very first delivery.
Ravi Bishnoi followed suit in the 10th over, dismissing Sediqullah Atal for 12 runs, leaving Afghanistan in a precarious position at 67/3. Reddy then struck again, removing Gulbadin Naib off the first ball of his next over.
Darwish Rasooli attempted to revive the innings with a couple of sixes, but Axar Patel dismissed Azmatullah Omarzai in the 14th over. Arshdeep then took out Rasooli in the next over, reducing Afghanistan to 105/6 after 15 overs.
Mohammad Nabi and Rashid Khan launched a late counterattack, adding 48 runs off just 28 balls, with Nabi scoring 20 off 14 and Rashid contributing 28 off 16. Jasprit Bumrah ended Nabi's innings in the penultimate over, while Reddy dismissed Rashid, restricting Afghanistan to 159/8 at the end of their innings.
Reddy's bowling figures were impressive, finishing with 3 wickets for 24 runs in three overs. Arshdeep Singh took 2 wickets for 35 runs, while Bumrah, Axar Patel, and Bishnoi contributed with one wicket each.
