India Clinches Historic T20 World Cup Title with Dominant Performance
India's Unstoppable Run in White-Ball Cricket
In Ahmedabad, Gujarat, on March 9, the Indian cricket team has showcased remarkable prowess in white-ball formats, achieving an impressive record of 31 victories out of 33 matches in ODIs and T20Is since the start of 2023.
The team has faced only two defeats during this period, including the ODI World Cup final against Australia three years ago and a loss to South Africa in the Super 8 stage of the 2026 T20 World Cup.
A stellar performance from the top-order batsmen—Abhishek Sharma, Sanju Samson, and Ishan Kishan—coupled with exceptional bowling from Jasprit Bumrah and Axar Patel, led India to a historic 96-run victory over New Zealand at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday.
With this win, India has made history by becoming the first team to secure the T20 World Cup title on home soil, the first to win it consecutively, and the first to claim three T20 World Cup titles.
Following this significant victory, Indian captain Suryakumar Yadav has surpassed former captain Rohit Sharma to achieve the highest winning percentage in T20Is, boasting an impressive 80.77%. Under his leadership, India has won 42 out of 52 matches, with eight losses and two no results.
The 96-run margin marks India's largest victory in T20 World Cup history, surpassing the previous record of 93 runs against Namibia earlier in the tournament.
In the final match, after winning the toss, New Zealand opted to field first. India set a formidable target of 255/5, thanks to contributions from Samson (89 runs off 46 balls, including five fours and eight sixes), Abhishek Sharma (52 runs off 21 balls, with six fours and three sixes), Ishan Kishan (54 runs off 25 balls, featuring four boundaries and four sixes), and Shivam Dube (26 not out off 8 balls, with three fours and two sixes).
Despite a valiant effort from Tim Seifert, who scored 52 runs off 26 balls with two fours and five sixes, the New Zealand team succumbed to the brilliance of Axar (3 wickets for 27 runs) and Bumrah (4 wickets for 15 runs), as India secured their third T20 World Cup title in style, becoming the first team to defend the title and the first host nation to win the trophy.
