India Climbs to Third in ICC Test Rankings Despite Lack of Recent Matches
India's Surprising Rise in ICC Test Rankings
In an unexpected turn of events, India has moved up to third place in the ICC Test Rankings, as announced by the International Cricket Council (ICC) following their annual update. Even without participating in any Test matches in 2026 thus far, the team, led by Shubman Gill, has surpassed England, now holding 104 points compared to England's 103. This update, released on May 1, reflects only the results from the last three years, with the most recent year (from May 1, 2025) receiving full weightage (100%), while the previous two years are weighted at 50%.
Factors Behind India's Ranking Improvement
The increase in India's ranking has surprised many, especially since their last red-ball match was a disappointing 2-0 defeat against South Africa at home in November 2025. The recent update disregards results prior to April 30, 2023. During that time, England had a stellar run, defeating India in a one-off Test and achieving a 3-0 whitewash against New Zealand at home, along with a 2-1 series win over South Africa and a 3-0 victory against Pakistan away.
Pakistan, India's long-time rivals, have also benefited from this update, moving ahead of Sri Lanka to claim the sixth position. Meanwhile, Australia and South Africa continue to lead the rankings, maintaining their positions from the 2025 World Test Championship (WTC).

Upcoming Test Match for India
India is set to return to Test cricket next month, facing Afghanistan in a one-off match at the Maharaja Yadavindra Singh International Cricket Stadium in New Chandigarh on June 6. This will be the inaugural Test at this new venue for the Punjab Cricket Association (PCA) and marks the first red-ball encounter between India and Afghanistan since their historic match in June 2018 at Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium. However, this upcoming match is not part of the ongoing WTC cycle. India's next WTC challenge will be a two-match Test series against Sri Lanka away in August 2026, followed by two Tests in New Zealand. The only remaining home series in this WTC cycle is a five-match Test series against Australia, scheduled from January 21 to March 3, 2027.
Concerns Over India's WTC Final Aspirations
India's chances of qualifying for the 2027 WTC final are in jeopardy, as they currently sit sixth in the standings with a win percentage of 48.15. To secure a spot in the final, they must win seven out of their remaining nine matches.
