Prime Minister Modi Applauds Athletes' Achievements

In a recent address, Prime Minister Narendra Modi celebrated India's remarkable accomplishment of securing 85 medals at the 2026 Asian Games held in Japan. Speaking at the World Summit 2026, he commended the women's recurve archery team for achieving their first-ever gold medals, both in team and individual events, as well as the Indian boxers who brought home three golds.

PM Modi expressed his admiration for the young athletes, acknowledging their significant role in enhancing India's reputation in sports. India concluded the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games in fourth place, amassing a total of 85 medals, which included 21 gold, 27 silver, and 37 bronze.

This achievement marks India's second consecutive year finishing among the top five nations in this prestigious continental competition.

During his speech, PM Modi reflected on a recent meeting with young athletes returning from the Games, stating, "India has won 85 medals this time, achieving several milestones for the first time. The Women’s Recurve Team has won team and individual Gold Medals for the first time. In a single Asian Games, India has won three Gold Medals in Boxing."

He also highlighted India's groundbreaking bronze medal in Sepak Takraw, a sport that is not widely recognized, noting that the men's quadrant team secured the country's first medal in this category.

PM Modi remarked, "For the first time, in the recent Asian Games, India has also won a medal in this sport, the Men’s Quadrant."

The Indian contingent achieved several other significant milestones, including gold medals for both men's and women's hockey teams in the same edition, historic performances in recurve archery, and the country's first medals in soft tennis and mixed martial arts (MMA).

Additionally, India celebrated its first gold medal in the women's trap event, while a silver in weightlifting marked the end of a 28-year drought for Asian Games medals in that discipline. A silver in Greco-Roman wrestling also represented a significant achievement, concluding a 64-year wait for an Indian finalist in that event.
