India and Sri Lanka Gear Up for Historic 600th Test Match
Teams Arrive for the Opening Test in Galle
Galle [Sri Lanka], August 15: Both Team India and Team Sri Lanka made their way to the Galle International Stadium on Saturday, preparing for the first Test of their two-match series.
As they arrived at the venue, both teams were set to kick off the series with this inaugural Test.
India is poised to become the first Asian nation and only the third team globally, following England and Australia, to reach the milestone of 600 Test matches, with the first match commencing on August 15, coinciding with India's Independence Day.
Shubman Gill, who assumed the role of Test captain for India last year, spoke to the media ahead of the match, expressing that leading the team in such a momentous game adds to the significance of the occasion.
"It’s a tremendous honor and privilege. Captaining any Test match for your country is a significant achievement. Leading my country in our 600th Test match is a remarkable honor, and doing so on Independence Day makes it even more special for us," Gill stated during the pre-match press conference.
Currently, India sits fifth in the World Test Championship 2025-27 standings, having secured four victories, faced four losses, and drawn one out of nine matches. Gill emphasized the critical nature of the Sri Lanka series in India's quest to qualify for the final. The second Test is equally crucial for Sri Lanka, who are positioned sixth in the WTC standings.
"Our primary objective is to reach the World Test Championship final next year. We have played nine Tests in this cycle, and I believe we need to win around six or seven more to enhance our chances of qualifying. Therefore, this series is vital for us, and we have prepared well leading up to it," he added.
India's Test Squad includes: Shubman Gill (c), KL Rahul (vc), Yashasvi Jaiswal, Rishabh Pant (wk), Dhruv Jurel (wk), Devdutt Padikkal, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav, Manav Suthar, Saransh Jain, Mohammed Siraj, Prasidh Krishna, Gurnoor Brar, Auqib Nabi, and Sarfaraz Khan.
Sri Lanka's Test Squad features: Dhananjaya De Silva (captain), Lahiru Udara, Nishan Madushka, Kamindu Mendis, Dinesh Chandimal, Pasindu Sooriyabandara, Sonal Dinusha, Niroshan Dickwella, Ramesh Mendis, Prabath Jayasuriya, Keshara Nuwantha, Milan Rathnayake, Asitha Fernando, Lahiru Kumara, Vishwa Fernando, and Dilshan Madushanka.
